Unhappy HELP! Dropped something behind ash tray cover

Aloha everyone! I need help! Over the weekend I had an identification card sitting on top of the ash tray/console cover of my 2014 GLK350. I totally forgot about it so when I slid the cover open the ID card fell behind it. The cover closes with no problem but it's very difficult to open. Is there an "easy" way to remove the cover without damaging it to get the card out?

Any/all suggestions are welcome!!!!

Lisa

I made a thread about this a while ago. Use ducktape, stick it to the cover in reverse, flipping the ends, roll down the cover, the card should stick to the ducktape. If you can, get Aluminum Ducktape, it works better for this, stickier and flatter.

OMG! Thank you so much! I'll give it a try as soon as I get home this evening. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has done this!!!

I think it would have been better if it opens like the centre arm rest. I can see that wood getting vertical scratches overtime for things getting caught in-between the gap then you slide back and fort. I guess the designers did not do a real job getting this design under scrutiny as they were in a hurry to put something where the shift knob was before.

I must have jiggled it around too much prior to trying the duct tape because I was unable to retrieve the ID card. On the bright side, the tape did push the card somewhere so that it doesn't interfere with the sliding of the cover. BTW: The ID card wasn't mine - it was one I found and was planning to return to Security. I'm sure by now the owner has a new one. LOL

Wow, just read this after my wife lost her SAMs Card in the console. I honestly thought it wouldn't work, but VIOLA, the duct tape worked! Not only did it retrieve the card, but several other pieces of paper lost in this area! Great tip! Thanks!!!!

I lost a credit card the same way. As a courtesy the dealer said he would take the ashtray console out. That would mean an appointment and my guilt for making them spend over an hour (although this is an MB design flaw) getting it out. Solution? Cancel the card and order a new one. I will try the duct tape in any case.
