Cool looking rig with the 17s and rack...interested to follow this thread to see if anyone really maxes out a GLK. I have an FJ62 for off road [really just beach] duty, but would be cool to see if somebody really goes for it with this car.

Seems everyone has a their own perception of "off road". If we're talking about a vehicle that will be prepped with skid plates, rock sliders, lifted suspension, locking diffs and some form of self-recovery, then the GLK isn't going to be the most appropriate platform. Gravel roads and some mild truck trails are more the GLK's cuppa tea (with suitable tires) ... this is what I refer to as "off pavement".

For a truly capable off road or expedition/overlanding vehicle platform that bears the 3-pointed star, best to look at the G-wagen or a Unimog.

Anything is possible in the after market & the right modifying fabricator to replace tires ,lifts ,etc..,
Not sure of costs but off road GLK250 probably exist on the Dakar Run.
As for choices,A G-wagon Unimog would be the right candidate as mentioned.
The Street Worthiness probably be in question although a concentrated search on World Wide Web ,there may be a mention of Some Rally with Mercedes Benz Vehicles off-road.

So i wrecked my '98 Taco with lift, tires etc. I was lucky and got a great deal on a 2010 GLK 350. i have gravel road and other 'off pavement' needs as you describe, and very much miss my old lifted truck.

I want to lift my GLK so that i at least look like i'm more serious, put bigger tires on it and dont have to be scared when i'm driving in the field at my farm or hitting deep potholes. Any suggestions on lift kits that fit this beast, or how to get my desired look? I'd like to put some mud or all terrains on this thing, safari rack for all my crap & spare etc. i'm not selling it to get a cheap Jeep, so yeah.

Thanks Kids!

This set-up is working well for me for some year 'round backroad exploring here in Western Canada.
Did you increase the ride-height, or is it just the additional [and chunkier] sidewall showing on the 235/65R17s that's giving that appearance?

I asked my local dealership to research the suspension parts used in the European "Offroad Technology Package" option to get another 30mm/1.18" in clearance/ride height, but they're having trouble so far.

No increase in ride height ... the 65-series tire sidewall height does give that illusion though.

Living in Canada , I believe you have better options with tires . My GLK 250 came with OEM ..Run flat tires with 19 inch rims and I am on my second set ..my next tire choice will be non-run flats and will carry a spare tire with rim on my roof rack ..perhaps I will purchase a set of 17 inch rims with 235/65R17.
In any case I need to purchase a more aggressive All season tire for traction .
Last Winter was a challenge with Summer tires ,waiting for clear roads & emergency tire chains...I continue to research for the best option before any upcoming Tire replacement.

I have a set of studded winter tires (18'') and a set of summer tires (19''), each on a dedicated set of rims. That's how you do it. :-)

That is on my Bucket list, however, Studded tires ..I would need to proceed with caution because of the time frame that they are permitted.
I plan to visit my local tire Store & discuss the option of Rims & all seasons tires with a more aggressive tread pattern.(after-Market Rim)
I like Cooper's ,or Pirelli's but need to look at tread wear...I will buy 5 tires with Rims...I have no Spare ,the extra one on my roof rack with a lock...
USA Sourced GLK 250 BT Run flats Originally DUNLAP Grandtreks that did not last long.. vehicle has now Summer Pirelli P-zero.back-up with Strap chains for extreme weather .situation... I am a MB OWNER with smaller pockets..

That is a great looking setup, I'm really envious of that. Do you find that those tires and the added roof rack add much in the way of road noise? Your pictures have me considering going that route when I need new tires, it's a really sharp look that you've accomplished.

For winter, I have some OE knock-offs that look great. Otherwise, every other car here uses cheapo black steelies from Costco (best price by a mile).

Best tires I ever had were Hankook Winter iPike, studded. My GF has some Toyo Observe G-02 that are good as well.

This year, I found a set of 1-winter-old Hankook replicas called «Winterclaw». Cheap chinese crap no doubt, but the tread is identical and they have an extra row of studs. Time will tell, but for 400$ installead and balanced, I can't go wrong.

Avoid Continentals at all costs. They made me believe that my Subaru sucked in the snow (when Subaru has arguably the best AWD system out there along with Audi).

1010tires.com has a great selection, BTW.

A lot of good points made ...some say the Chinese brands are good.
It is hard to tell Dunlap is owned by Goodyear,Bridgestone own Firestone.
And of course there are comparisons made concerning the best AWD systems.

As for me ,I am going to get the most out my remaining time (tread with my Pirelli Pzero's Summer Tires before the Winter changes ) I was lucky Last Year that there was little snow or ice to test traction but the next set will be a non-run flat 4 with a spare mounted on a 19 inch rim...I will search for a rim from a auto recycler (junk yard ) but that one rim is still very expensive used...I have a few websites to purchase the MB Rim.

Since I live in Quebec City, not only are winter tires a no-brainer, but they are actually mandatory, by provincial law, and have been for 10 years or so.

Most people forego fancy rims because they get damaged by road salt any way.

By putting winter tires (generally -1 size rim) on a dedicated set of rims, you can change them out yourself and you recoup your money within 2-3 years.

As you know : US Configured 2014 MB GLK250BT are delivered with Dunlap Run Flat All seasons tires with 19 inch rims no spare..Maximum snow 3 Inches...per No Goodyear warranty for run flats. The tread life was short as is the case for Some run flat tires...The Canada GLK 250 BT come with a Compact Spare & repair kit with Flat tire sealant/inflater . As for what your selection for stock tires delivered ,that is an unknown. My Service manual states the Canada Configuration & has an empty space for Sealant & inflater in the jack storage area.I inquired about the Compact Spare.
The recommendation from the MB Forum did not recommend buying the compact spare, rather purchase non run flat tires by correct size, and purchase a Rim & extra tire mounted. placing the spare on the roof locked..I already have a roof rack & basket system & will wait until my present run flats need replacement.
I am not usual MB Owner wit h big pockets $$$ My last set of 4 Run flats was $1200 & I plan to keep the car for a long time & will not repeat the stupid mistakes I made before.
Many Kudos to the Forum to assist me in my decision making in the future.
In the United States various States set standards for studded tires, snow chains ,other requirements.

I'm in Canada and the car definitely didn't come with a compact spare, there simply isn't room to fit it. I bought a Vredestein Spacemaster, and for long distance trips, I put it behind the front seat (I'm short, so there is room for it).

Here are my winter rims/tires :

I stand corrected ,as i believed that Vredestein Spacemaster came with vehicle.
I do know it is bulky and heavy based on those reporting on the MB World forum.
It is reported that this spare is costly, but an option necessary to avoid a flat tire.
One additional option to review if a new set of tires are replaced in the future.

The Spacemaster is not that bulky, but it IS a rim wide enough for a 185-wide tire on a 17'' rim, so it takes up probably 21-22 inches of space. In my case, small enough to fit behind the front seat.

Yes,there are many opinions out there & it provides constructive help.
One more question...??
Do you have a special sealant to inflate the tire...I have seen presentations on youTube.
Is a sealant used or do you just inflate the Spacemaster tire with just air?
It seems to obtain such a tire, the web sites are from Canada or sold on Ebay...PRICE$$ for Vredstein Space Master

You only inflate the Vredestein with a normal compressor, provided it reaches at least 50psi (that's the recommended pressure, I think). No sealant.

VW used similar collapsible spare tires in Westfalias over 40 years go (those crafty germans!).

Maybe you could expand your search using different search keywords.

I paid a little over 200$ for mine at a local tire shop, which is comparable to a normal rim + tire combo, with the added coolness and portability factor.

Those space saver spares are pretty neat to watch. I really like the look of the roof rack and the 17" wheels. My only concern is added noise, and if the rack/wheel would impact the mpg's much.

I use my roof rack on a regular basis ,OEM Roof Rack for MB GLK 250 It is a system with cross bars ,attached to the crossbar is a Curt roof system with a air dam air foil which eliminates much of noise making "in theory aero dynamic ". I have traveled on some long trips ,as long as the what is being carried is below the height of the air foil there is no drag ..I have not suffered any great amount lost mpg...The plan is to Install a Spare with lock in that roof system. There are many systems of Baskets or Shells...I have a water proof bag used for luggage. Once I purchase a spare ,I will figure out a cover system for the spare.
I have yet to find a Vredstein Spacemaster tire or a MB KOMPRESSOR space saver in the USA.
There are many great YouTube Video but I am unable to locate a new Vredstein Spacemaster, I do not wish to purchase a Ebay sourced tire.
Perhaps a member of the MB Forum can assist me in locating this spare at a fair price and one that is safe to have & use in that emergency designed situation.
The US, Canada and European have different idea on Spares and Availability.
A used tire is not a safe tire especially with the spacesaver,SpaceMaster.
Mercedes Benz are more popular in Europe and options seem to be more available to meet the needs of MB Owners.

You need to consult your owners manual that will provide the the conversion chart for 16 inch tires.
I do not believe there is a reference for a sixteen inch tire.(USA/CANADA)
The original tire size for the vehicle is a 19 inch tire and suitable rim. Rim and Tire size
All tires must be the same because of the AWD system computer control.
I recommend you check the web for foreign sourced information because vehicle can be found in UK,and other European countries.
Information concerning tire (TYRE) and rims may include 16 inch
