2013 GLK250 Bluetec
Mercedes roof luggage carrier

Hi everyone. I have a 2013 GLK250 Bluetec and love it. The only negative aspect I can see is the storage is on the small side. My wife and I took a road trip up Calif highway 1, then over to Crater lake in Oregon and then ultimately to Seattle. It was just the two of us so room was not really an issue, but if we had anyone else riding with us it would have been tight. So I was wondering if anyone has purchased the Mercedes roof luggage carrier and if so how they like it

We bought the roof rack from Mercedes. But the roof box is a Thule (They probably make the MB one too!). The boxes are quite flimsy but do the job.

Thule make several models at different price levels. Main difference seems to be in the clamping mechanism. I bought the lowest cost model, mainly because Dick's Sporting Goods had it in stock. The clamping bolts/plates were poor, so I bought some U-bolts and handwheel nuts from Lowes and they work OK. I also epoxied in plywood stiffeners in the bolting area. The premier versions use a type of latch that probably makes things easier. Perhaps MB use those?

Mounting and dismounting the box is a bit of a chore. We use our box when we snowbird South. So just once on and once off each year. We can handle that!

One other thing - When we get home, the GLK won't fit in the garage! So need to get box off asap!

We got the Mercedes large roof carrier 3 years ago and love it. Its pretty solid and not made by thule. It opens from both sides and when its open you cant pull the key from the lock. It has worked really well for our family and its even cheaper now, I paid around 780$

there some used roof rack bars on craigslist Pittsburgh for 165$

I'm not sure, i keep it clean and I always wax the front of the GLK and the carrier really good before our trips. I can see what kind of gas mileage I get on the way home. I usually do 80 on the highways with the cruise on.

Hey scroogeactor, I had this one on my GLK250 but decided to take off. It's just been sitting in my garage now. If you live in Cali and are interested PM me.

Do you actually know who does make the boxes for Mercedes?

Whoever it is, has made an excellent copy of the Thule boxes!

In the link below, an MB box owner was looking for parts and was, it seems, directed to Thule for the parts:

https://www.etrailer.com/question-26292.html

I have a mercedes roof top cargo box roughly 18 CUFT with out the roof mounts. I tried purcashing replacement parts from mercedes and they could not provide the interior mounting hardware and suggested that I reach out to a Thule dealer as their cargo boxes are manufactured by Thule.

I ended up getting 25.6 MPG on the way home with the cruise set on 80mph, that was with some fresh wax on the front end and roof turtle
