2015 GLK
New Owner: Observations and Questions...

Just traded my 2010 Corvette for a 2015 (black on black) GLK last week, as I'm retiring and want a travel vehicle. What attracted me to this Mercedes is the great angular lines and the beautiful wood grain dash (I don't care for the rounded lines and interior of the redesigned 2016 replacement). Transitioning from a sports car, I really like the GLK's comfortable ride over road imperfections, and the horsepower is decent. Not a big fan of the 'ECO" mode engine shut down at red lights and wish there was a way to make 'Sport Mode' the default, as I find acceleration a bit delayed and jerky. Overall, I really like this SUV. A few questions:

Has anyone converted the standard ignition to keyless, and if so, how much did dealer charge?
What's with the 20K brake fluid change? Never heard of such a thing!
Does this vehicle require additional oil between service?
Any tips on black painting the rust on the brake calipers without taking the wheels off?
Any pictures of cool roof baskets?
Ideas for iPhone holders?
Pandora (et al) interface?

Lastly, I invite all tips and pointers!

Congrats. I bought it for my daughter and gets a chance to drive it when she's in school. I find the V6 powerful enough and if you have the 4matic stable enough. Roof box would be Thule on oem crossbars, mileage is decent and no it doesn't consume oil in between.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and holds water. Water in brake fluid boils when the calipers get hot. Brake fluid needs to be incompressible. Water contamination, and corrosion, leads to spongy brakes and reduced braking capacity. Hence, brake fluid changes are standard practice on all cars, and really critical for serious (track) drivers.

Before purchasing a GLK for my wife, I watched for issues on both the diesel and gas versions and never saw any indication that GLKs, gas or diesel, had elevated oil consumption problems.

Not sure if you meant roof basket or box, but I really like my roof basket from Kuat for the summer months. It has a built-in bike mount and is nicely built to carry lots of camping/beach type stuff. It also comes with an 18" extension which I don't use. I have the skinny version which fits nicely between the 2 bike racks. They make a full-width one too. I have mine on Whispbars which I have been very happy with. They're way lower-profile than the factory crossbars.

FC GLK, I really like your rack! I never considered going narrow, but it looks great. I'll check out the Kuat website. Also, I like the idea of a lower crossbar, as my garage door opener motor sits rather low. Did you ever measure the height from the GLK roof? Thanks. Jim

Jim,

The whispbars don't really add much height at all, I'd say maybe 1" above the rails factory side rails. They actually clamp around the rails and sit between them rather than on top. The basket adds about 7". The total height is right at 75" from the ground.

One negative with the basket is it does create more wind noise than my Yakima box, especially noticeable with panoramic sunroof.

75" would work. I like your black wheels as well. I'm wanting to give my new GLK a more rugged look. Thanks so much for your help.
