2014 GLK350 Cabin Noise

Guys, I know there have been volumes written here on this, but I'm not sure if anyone has came up with an answer. I just purchased a leased 2014, GLK that is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. It only has 9 thousand miles. When we test drove the car we came to hiway speed, but not to 60 or 70 mph. On our drive home we noticed an excessive amount of wind noise seeming to come from the passengers side of the SUV. We also have a SRX and a Silverado LTZ and both are completely quiet and devoid of any wind noise at all. We also noticed when braking it seemed to be very grabby and you had to push pretty hard to slow the vehicle down. Main concern was the noise at Hiway speed of 60 to 70 MPH. It is not only really noticeable but so loud to the point of disturbing normal conversation. We called the Mercedes dealership and they said they had not heard of any wind noise problems in the GLK. Makes it sound like I'm going to have a devil of a time getting this fixed. Would love to be armed with some information when I head in Monday to get this addressed.

I have a 2014 glk350 4matic bought new as well. No such wind noise. Check rear tires for imbalance or damage or rear hatch for damage.

Naturally. But it is in fact a problem on some GLKs (search the forum, you'll see). Looks like in some cases it has been fixed by a replacement molding over the windshield, rechecking the seal between the battery box and the cowl under the hood, or replacing the windshield.

Ours is still noisy, I tried the things other than the windshield to no avail. I tried taping over all the windshield seams to see if it helps; it didn't. So I pretty much learned to live with it. It's so noisy inside that I can't use the hands free phone, the wind noise overpowers the microphone.

I know others with 2011's have said that theirs is the quietest car they ever had; doesn't help me any. Like the rattle in the back that no one has been able to find, I am just going to accept it (my wife doesn't seem to notice these things, and she is the primary driver of the GLK, so it all works out).

Maybe your dealer is one of the more thorough ones and he'll find something, though the first reaction ("never heard of this") is not encouraging.

My 2013 has the noise coming in from the top area. Yes, super loud at 75. Sure they said, "they haven't heard of any noise problems" , oh bs, from what I've read this isn't a rare issue. I got blown off when I took mine in, I guess I'll document it before my next try at a repair. To your advantage, sound, as measured in Decibles, the db rating, can be found for the Glk, I have a db sound meter app for my phone, (And a real sound meter) I'm going to video showing where my sound is coming from before I go back an fight this issue, to demand a repair. Read up, some people have gotten it fixed, many others are lied to that its normal. Let us know what happens.

Decibel rating for the 2014 v6 are
70 mph. 65.8
75 mph. 67.8
85 mph. 69.3
I have a full list but don't know how to post it here. I think Consumer reports publishes db ratings of cars they test. You could get a db sound app for your phone, but it won't be accurate, the ones I have on my iPhone don't compare to my actual sound Decibel meter

Here is the top of the sheet , showing the speed of the tests, and the website. Your going to need this and proof you exceed it , if you have to fight for a repair.

Last year I had to change my cracked windshield and I was worried about noise issues, when I got the car back ( windshield was replaced by MB dealer ) there was a loud noise coming from the windshield, i took it back to the dealer and they said we are going to resealed it, had the car for another day and got it back with the same noise !!

I didn't know what to say, they took a test drive with me in the car and they guy kept saying this is how your car sound at higher speed !! ( no its not, I know how it sound )

I went with them in a newer GLK, ( didn't let me drive ) and the guys was speeding at moderate speed no noise what so ever and insisted in saying there is noise coming up !!

If I had this measurement before, I could have done something, after a year an a half now, I guess I can't do anything about it and have to live with it

Just thought I share my experience !

I thought mine was noisier than normal until I went on a trip and actually tested sound level with a real sound meter, the phone apps are not accurate, some show louder then actuality. It's not to late to get a repair if it's not done right, since you already made this complaint a long time ago. First thing would be to get a db meter and actually see where your vehicle is in sound level at different speeds.

See if the rubber strip at the top of the windshield can be lifted up at all. Mine was loose and would lift up in the middle when driving over, say, 20 mph. It made for quite a wind roar. Everything looked normal but a pretty knowledgeable service writer I happened to be talking to pointed it out. I would have never found it otherwise. When it was replaced the car became Mercedes quiet again.
