Free ride for my GLK

Bought a car trailer to tow our GLK250 behind our coach.

Now to figure out how to transfer some off that mileage to the coach. The coach has a Cummins M11 (11 litres) diesel that makes 450HP & 1450 Lb Ft of torque & gets 8MPG.

You should see the bill when topping up the 200 gallon fuel tank. "Double damn"

But the coach is part of our retirement plan to see the USA. We have been very fortunate to have lived in several countries. (Japan, Germany, Philippines) But we haven't seen all of the USA. This coach will be much better than driving or flying and using hotels and eating out every day. We can drive a few hundred miles and stop for a week or a month. Then move on. So the fuel use isn't as bad as it would seem as we will not be marathon driving like most folks do on their annual holiday.

The idea of having an RV has always appealed to me, but you still have to rent a space in an RV park, so while it costs less than staying at the Ritz, travelling across country in a fuel-efficient vehicle and sleeping in modest hotels or AirBNB-type places is an attractive option. Granted, you still have to eat out, but then again, you also have to buy food when travelling in an RV.

I would love to have a small RV based on a Sprinter but man, these are soooooooo expensive.

But when you dig deeper. You will find that most RV parks have monthly rates as well as daily. Ranging (on average) from $500-$900 per month (higher if you want a fancy resort) That's $16-$30 per day. Not likely to even find a hotel full of fleas for that little money. For the cost of a good meal at a decent restaurant for the wife and I. We could buy several days worth of groceries from a store. And one can stay at a Army Corp of Engineers campsite or BLM land for $0 dollars. It's called boondocking as there are no hook-ups and you must live off of your on-board water supplies and your waste water tank capacities. You just have to run your generator every morning to charge the battery bank.

The idea of long term travel using hotels is not my idea of a fun way to travel. You have to drag your bags to your room and deal with the fun of suitcase living. Which is fine for a two week annual holiday. We find it much nicer to have closets and lots of drawers for our clothes and be just a few steps from fresh air.

Here are some photos of the inside. It's a lot nicer than most hotel rooms and I bet I bought this for less than a lot of the folks here paid for their new GLK's $48,000

That is one nice, vast interior.
