In the case of the ML 4x4 design, i would expect that you would lose drive completely (the same as if the rear or front propshaft was removed) as the transfer case has no lock-up facility and acts as a two speed differential to all four wheels. The wheel 'lock' facility comes via the electronic 'ets' system where individual wheels are locked by the calipers as and when a spinning wheel is detected
