2000 ML430 coolant temperature sensor won't stay in

I am replacing my water pump, thermostat and coolant temperature sensor in my 2000 ML430 and have run into a problem when reinstalling the temp sensor. The sensor goes on the opening fine and the horseshoe clip goes on and is supposed to hold the sensor in place. The problem is that the clip doesn't secure it in place. The clip doesn't seem to touch anything else but the sensor and I'm at a loss as to what I'm missing here. Iv watched a u tube video and I'm doing everything he's doing but when he puts the clip on his it fits snug n. When i put the clip on mine it pulls right out. I'm usually pretty adept at figuring this stuff out on my own but I need a hand with this one. Many thanks in advance.

I figured it out

The water pump has to be installed first. The clip goes behind the lip of the water pump.
