2002 ML320 AC compressor

I have a 2002 ML320 and recently the AC has stopped working. I checked the usual and everything looks OK. (Pressures are ok, compressor getting voltage, no signs of leaks) when I started to look for a replacement compressor, I noticed that a vast majority of the aftermarket compressors or either a fixed displaced or internally variable compressor as apposed to the externally variable compressor on my vehicle. My question is this, has anyone ever replaced a compressor where they installed one of these aftermarket options? if so, how where the results, where there any negative effects to the system? My main concern is that the electric magnetic coil will pull higher amperage and damage the electric system. Thanks for the feedback.

Why don't you have the car scanned for codes & have a Pro Aircon shop check the amount of gas in the system & also check for leaks.
