ML320 key fob stopped working after ECU replaced

A family member's 1998 ML320 key fob buttons stopped working after the car's ECU (or maybe it was the AAM, not sure) was replaced. The car can now only be unlocked manually from the keyhole or unlocked/locked using the center console button. The dealership quoted $385 to buy a brand new key, but I'm wondering if the existing key can be reprogrammed to the new ECU.

Thanks in advance.

You must first find out exactly what was replaced, no guessing.
