ignition key problem

When i turn of the car (key in "0" position) i can take out the key from the ignition but the car behaves as if the key is still in the ignition.

Even with the key out of the ignition the steering column wont lock, the warning buzzer goes off when i open driver's side door and remote key fob functions dont work.

Like i said the car behaves as if the key is still in the ignition in the "0" position.

Normally after i shift to park and turn key to "0" position in prepapration for removing the key i hear a certain click sound near the tumbler... now i dont hear the click sound.

any suggestions?

Could be Ignition switch, shift lock cable, or the shifter. Autogunner.

This seems related so I'll add it to this thread. My radio still turns on after I remove the key. does anyone know why? Even after I lock it, the radio still remains on. Please note that the radio shuts off automatically when I remove the key. But if I press the on button, it'll turn back on and stay on til I turn it back off. Any ideas?

Thats normal/ All radios can be turned on manually after turning off and removing the key. Never tried it but I do believe it will turn off by itself after a period of time following a manual turn on sans key.

I recently started having the same issues on my '99 ML-320. I suspect it's the ignition switch but was wondering if there might be a work around that will allow me to use the remote and kill the chime when I open the door.

If I have to replace the ignition switch is there any way that i will be able to use my current keys?

Thanks,
Ski

Sounds like I may need to check the sterring lock assembly - anyone have instructions on how to do this?

Thanks

Most likely the tumbler is faulty, or ignition switch. Just had these replaced on my old ML320. communication between the car and the keys stopped functioning shortly after the dealer replaced these parts.
