New Battery from Roadside Assistance for $175!!
I realize some people know this deal, but for those that don't...
Battery on my ML550 was completely dead this morning (thanks to child playing with the headlights). Called Roadside Assistance, Tech called back and asked if I could wait an hour for the jump because he was finishing up in the local shop (Wagner Mercedes, Shrewsbury). No problem. In the meantime, I called my dealership Herb Chambers, Natick and asked for a price on replacement battery. Was quoted $430 for the Main. Ouch. Roadside Assistance guy shows up, jumps the car, and I ask how do I know when to replace the main battery. He said about every 4/5 years. My ML is 2008 and I know I've never done that. So, I asked how much I should expect to pay for that, he said "We can do it for $175". I asked how much more is it with labor and he corrected me saying "$175 includes the labor, I can do it right here if you like". Stunned, I asked if he had the battery with him, which he did. Long story short it was $255 LESS EXPENSIVE!! I'm pretty certain this deal is strictly through Roadside Assistance and not the dealership. All I have to say is WOW!! I wonder if they can do my Service B in the driveway too!! PS. I included a pic of the bill for any non-believers.

dealer cost is high, yes. roadside assistance through MBUSA may appear to be
a bargain by comparison. but for me, it's still high which is why i perform
monthly review and maintenance on the battery. that said, it is relatively easy
to replace the group 48/49, 900cca battery for about 75% of what roadside
assistance charges if you shop carefully.
it isn't feasible for MBUSA to have roadside assistance from a dealer every time
so in some cases, this is contracted out

Not any more...you must spend money at the dealer every 18 months to keep your roadside coverage. I think it is about $100.00 a year, weather it is part of service or buying parts over the counter. Of course this does not apply while the vehicle is still in warranty. This was a policy implemented in the beginning of 2011.

Which brand battery I you go with, and is getting a tradition brand like energizer or interstate a good idea? FYI, my dealer quote on my replacement was $501.50.

Regarding battery replacement...when replacing the battery on my BMW "d" a dealer had to somehow flash the vehicle's main computer to tell it that there was a new battery. This, apparently, was to prevent the altenator from over charging,or under charging, the battery. Is anything like this required for late model MB's or is it as simple as just dropping in a new one and knowing you're good for the next few years?

Roadside assist over Dealer for battery=$200 saved
Hey guys,
Thanks a bunch for the advice found while searching the forum.
I got my battery replaced at home for $175 (no labor cost) and so, even with tip I am at half the price of the dealership quoted $400 for my C300 battery.
Brand new OEM.... Me happy .... and now I can drive.
