Question Need Help on Front wheel Bearing for 2008 ML350

Hi Everyone,

Here I came back with another problem. Today I gave my 2008 ML350 (40K Mileage) for Service D to my local Mechanic and he said everything looks good and all the fluid levels are good, so he just changed Oil and filter.

But he told me a bad news saying I need to change my front left wheel bearing(Driver side), because it is giving noise when he test drives my car in a quite street. Honestly till today morning I never felt any sound except some air sound when I go on freeways which may be the same sound which I might have misunderstood thinking it is just air sound.

Now my question is to change the bearing do we need to change the rooter too? because he said we can't change only the bearing without rooter change. Also he said 800$ is the charge for it. So I am confused whether he is giving the correct info or not.

Any help on this is appreciable.

Is there anyway I can find myself that bearing is gone?

Thanks a lot for your valuable answers in advance

Praveen

This so called mechanic you have is trying to rip you off !!!!!! first the front rotors are separate from the hub that contains the bearing ,its basic stuff ! secondly if there was a bearing noise (and i wonder if there is??) the cost would be no where near $800 more like $100 . Try driving down a quiet road swerve slightly left and right this puts all the weight on one or other front wheels if the sound is the same then i wonder how he could tell , if you are still worried take it to another proper mechanic.

Thank you very much for taking time to respond Davey,

I will drive it as you suggested and see what I can find and let you know. And he said to change the Bearing he needs to change the whole wheel Hub which costs 800$ is that correct? or we can just change bearing?

Once again Thanks alot

Check out my post on doing the front wheel bearings to get an idea of what they do. I paid 150 a piece for my fro t bearings from the dealer because it is hard to find them. I would personally make sure they put in the oem bearings. You dont want them to fail. With that said I thi k 400-500 would be more reasonable. 800 for both sides maybe but not for one. I have the part number listes also look up diy front lower ball joints and bearings.

here is a pic of the hub... i did not do the hub. The hub is a separate piece that is pressed into the bearing and pressed out but really doesnt need to be changed generally
