2001 ml 320 transmission torque converter seal?

130k miles. Had truck 3 days no problems. Exiting highway as trany shifts down clunk. Pull into parking space, puddle of transmission fluid under car. Had it towed home and looked at by my mechanic. He says he is sure after removing housing, it must be leaking from torque converter seal. He said tranny must be dropped to change seal. Is there any other probable point of leak in that area under housing?
