Steering Rack Question
Ive been hearing a clunking sound when turning the steering wheel on my 2006 ml350 65k miles, I had my wife turn the steering wheel from left to right while I checked underneath and I noticed that the steering toward the drivers side would move up and down, is that normal?
Thanks,
Robert

They determined that the Steering Collar Bearing needed to be reattached to the steering shaft.. After the repair the steering just never seemed right, there was a lot of vibration in the wheel.
Several addition trips to the dealer for them to check it out and every time we were told the steering was fine.
Months later the noise came back and then they replaced the steering coupling. Once again the steering was never the same, over any road imperfection we would get a vibration through the steering wheel that would drive me and my wife nuts. It literally felt like the front end was going to fall off. I'm not exaggerating.
This along with numerous other problems is why MB finally gave in and bought the 2011 back from us in 2012.

It was bad enough sharing /writing all the issues here at the time that I think I got carpal tunnel from it... LOL.
But to actually experience all the issues and service visits was just incredible. So glad that it 2 years behind me...
