Question Steering Knuckle leaking $$$

Had my '06 ML350 in to fix a transmission problem (conductor plate/module replaced) and they said my "steering knuckle" is leaking. Cost: $1,700.00! Ouch. I have just over 58k miles on the ML. I said not now since I had just spent $1,200.00 get the transmission fixed. Can someone tell me what fixing this "leak" entails. I haven't noticed any problems with my steering. They did say it required an alignment following the fix which tacked on some extra $.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
Sounds like total BS.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
