2008 ML350 with P0016,P0017,P0521,P1208 Codes

Hello all,

I have a 2008 ML350 with 128,000 miles at about three weeks ago the the check engine light came on while driving on the freeway, a soon as I arrived home I scanned the car for codes and came up with P0016 and P0017. I asked my dealer about the codes and to see if mine had a bad balanced shaft but they said that there was no way for them to know. So I ran my VIN number and seems like mine is not affected. I put in all four new Cam Magnets but the codes are still there--sometimes the check engine light does not come on. I am still driving it as is and seems to be running fine. I also just took it to a 600 mile drive and everything seem normal, it did feel a little slow on hills but other than that everything was fine. Do you guys think I should change all four Cam shaft position sensor this time and see if that takes care of the problem?. I also check the holes where the position sensor go and the circles seem to be on the center. Also all this trouble started the next day after I changed the engine oil, I used Mobil 0-40.

I cleared the codes 0016 and 0017 about two days ago and the CEL hast come back on but now when I scan the car again I get codes P0521 and P1208.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

If you don't mind my asking where did you go to check if you are in the affected range?

I just had the same two codes (P0016/P0017) and my local MB dealer is saying its a stretched timing chain only, and no balance shaft issue... FWIW

I had similar problem with my 2008 ML 350.

1) I had code P0019, changed all Camshaft and Crankshaft sensor did not help. Finally bought Used engine for $2200 + 600 Installation code and done with it.

2) Same Flapper problem with Air Intake manifold. Bought below Aluminium (Not the Mercedes Plastic) and installed it. It is much cheaper then any other out there. there is good number of Youtube video on how to change it. Replacing with brand new MB Air Intake can get you same issue since it has plastic flapper. Almost every car has this issue some point.

Amazon.com: RK09 2721402201 05-11 Mercedes-Benz Manifold Repair Kit & Gasket Set 05 06 07 08 09 10 11: Automotive Amazon.com: RK09 2721402201 05-11 Mercedes-Benz Manifold Repair Kit & Gasket Set 05 06 07 08 09 10 11: Automotive

Get someone who knows how to remove and install Air Intake back and replace one of the part and you are good to go.

There is cheaper around $68 dollar aluminium flapper on web but I forgot who is selling it. you will have to do some research. It is mechanical part so as long as it is not plastic you are good.

I assume you already have car with dealer and authorized repair. Without Aluminium flapper you are looking at problem again in couple years also, dealer does not replace flapper, they will replace entire $950 intake.

I forgot to mention, if you would have bought engine from accident car, engine assembly comes with Air Intake so you could have solved both problem with one. Anyways it is too late for this for someone who might run into similar issue.

I have a 2007 E350 with about 117K miles. The car is running fine but the Check Engine Light is always on. The dealer scanned several error codes and states "PO2206 Powertrain Intake Manifold, Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck, Bank 1" is the main issue to be fixed. He is suggesting replacement of the Intake Manifold then retesting the systems. This repair would cost $2900. Has anyone experienced similar problems and are there less expensive solutions? Thanks for your help.

Luckily it is much cheaper solution. I have spent hours of research to fix this problem and fixed the problem.

here is what you need to do:
1) Buy below Kit:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MotorKing-Mercedes-Benz-Intake-Manifold-Air-Flap-Runner-Repair-Kit-Gasket-RK09-/390534330341?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5aeda8f7e5&vxp=mtr&rmvSB=true
Before buying make sure it is broken in your car. Open engine cover and focus light between intake manifold and Air Pump, you will see plastic similar part as ebay which is broken. If it is indeed broken, you can buy this part.

2) If you are not technically savvy, then find someone knows and you can guide them what to do. Important thing in this is mechanic should able to remove and put back the Air Intake manifold. Rest you can guide them.

3) Once Intake is removed, replace Aluminium part with broken Plastic part. Make sure you replace Manifold Gasket with new one. While you are there make sure all Vacuum Hose are good and if not replace with new one.

Here is the step by Step instruction on how to remove Air Intake:

Here is couple of youtube video you can watch how it is done:

Make sure battery Negative cable (Under the passenger seat) is disconnected before Intake work is started. You will have to remove computer. My guy did not do it and we ended up draining battery and Had to replace Aux battery. Lessons learned.

Also, Do not forget to clean your manifold. you will see it is gunked up. I used BLUE Cleaner from Advanced auto to clean Intake. It was very clean after all done. you can use Diesel or Kerosene if you have access.

I was able to do entire repair within $350.
Good Luck.
