Stretched chain in transferbox?

Be cool...

This applies to: A2512800700(mercedes number)

It´s quite easy to overhaul from underneeth.
New chain about 95-100$
Oil and sealant about 50-60$

Chain: Search ebay for HV-091(Borg & Warner Number)
Oil: Dexron6 of good quality.
Sealant: loctite 5910

Loosen the rear propshaft from the box.
also loosen it from 1st holder in body, underneeth the heatsheilds.
You can just about then pry the cv joint off from transferbox.
Loosen all torx screws.
Pull off the case with propshaft held 'above' the case.
Then just pull off both gears at the same time with the chain.
Clean, and put back in reverse order.
About 1.5hrs of work when on lift.

Good luck!
And save huge amount of dollars

Don´t forget to clean the magnet in the cover.
It´s located in the 'bottom'.

thanks for posting that with the part numbers etc

this seems to be an issue with these transfer cases, i am hoping that changing my fluid often will slow down the stretching....

my transfer case the chain holder broke off because it was so loose, so replaced the transfer case with a used one
but had it pulled apart and we checked the chain tightness before installing it

will be interesting to see how it does the next few years

Fantastic!

This worked like a charm. Don't try and think that you can remove the transfer case w/o removing the center support of the driveshaft under the heat shields...ask me how I know.

I don't doubt that this could be a 1.5 hour job with a lift, but crawling under the car with it on a coup;e of ramps took two days. But, it did save me $6000. The estimate that I got from an independent shop was $6400. $5.8k of that was for a remanufactured unit from MB. I spent $90 for the chain, $7 for Valvoline synthetic ATF, & $5 for Permatex gasket maker. YMMV.

What are symptoms of a stretched chain? I'm a new w164 owner and don't know what to look/listen/feel for on this vehicle (yet). So far, it drives and rides great, has been maintained very well but at
145K miles, I would assume that this may be an item that I will have to address.

When the change starts to slip, you’ll hear a ratcheting sound. It is pretty loud and can be felt. This will occur under hard acceleration and or, under light acceleration if it’s really worn. Yes, these chains seem to be a weak point on the drivetrain. Good luck.
