ML550 Muffler Delete Videos

Hey guys, got my mufflers taken off about a month ago and figured I'd post some vids of what it sounds like if anybody is looking to do something to their exhaust as well. I only took off the mufflers and put stainless steel pipes in place of where the mufflers were, everything else is completely stock and has not been touched. I love the sound, louder than a stock ML63 of my year! Recorded with my phone so I apologize if the quality isn't too great. If anybody has any questions, I'll be happy to answer.

You got pics of what it looks like underneath so we get a better idea?

I took off my resonators and the sound change wasn't much. I would say 10-15% more louder.

The end result wasn't what I was looking for.

Yours sounds sweet. But just taking off the mufflers worries me simply because I like visually how they fill up the undercarriage. I'm concerned just two little pipes in their place wont look as good.

I've posted a video on here before with mine.

Hey Ouzo, I'll take a picture of it tomorrow morning and post it.

I personally didn't like how you could see the mufflers sticking out from the undercarriage when you looked at the rear end of the car, so it was a win-win situation for me.

As for the sound, I couldn't ask for anything more, I was also gonna do resonator delete only but decided to go muffler and keep the resonators, and I don't regret it one bit haha

Here are 2 quick pics I just took. To me the rear end looks much better now because you don't see those massive mufflers bulging out, and as for the piping, the black piping is the stainless steel pipe that I put in its place. If you need me to take better picture, I'll hop under the car in the morning.

Thanks bud. Now that I've removed my resonators I'm afraid it might be to loud.

But will consider this.

No problem man, I don't know how I would feel about that either seeing as the resonators are also off because that would be pretty damn loud haha

You could always just put some glass-packs in there instead. That will give you the desired deep throaty sound and might be a little easier to pass an emissions inspection.

f_nark54 - any perceived differences in engine output or fuel consumption with the mod?

Thanks

In terms of fuel economy, have not noticed even the slightest change from taking off the mufflers, I also thought it would hurt the fuel economy but I've reset every week and my average mpg looks the same as before. With driving I have noticed a difference. Now that the mufflers are gone, there is a lot less back pressure in the exhaust. Meaning at lower RPM's (1k to 2k-ish) it is a lot less jumpy because the gases aren't backed up in the muffler. I remember being in traffic and lightly pressing on the gas and the car just surging forward, which I really hated, but now that issue is completely resolved as it is less jumpy. At higher RPM's it feels a little more responsive and eager to move, especially if you are using the paddle shifters. Overall, I think I killed 3 birds with one stone:

1. Not as jumpy on the throttle at low RPM's

2. Picks up more quickly (or at least feels like it) in higher RPM's

3. Sound is music to my ears

It also feels like its just a little quicker than before, but then again that could just be the sound from the exhaust tricking me into thinking I'm moving faster haha

Hey dude, nice job. Sound is amazing on yours. I just did my resonator delete in my ml550 it’s an 08. I did not however do a muffler delete it looks like and sounds like you did both I’m wondering when you had the muffler deleted what did you put in place of the muffler did you run straight pipe back I know these are duel exhaust through July exhaust soul how did that end up looking underneath the vehicle. Had some other questions but hopefully this thread is still active and maybe I can get a response

Hey dude, thank you!

I have since sold the car after 221,000 miles of driving, thing was a frickin beast. In this post I had deleted just the mufflers, not the resonators just yet, but I ended up cutting the resonators off too after a while, just never got around to posting a video of how that sounded.

It was straight pipes from the big cats up front all the way to the back, literally nothing in between.

Muffler delete alone added some drone, but deleting the resonators afterwards didn't seem to dramatically add drone, just a lot of nice V8 "cracking" noise, it was so sick. The tone changed a lot after I deleted the resonators, from just deep with the mufflers, to almost deep and raspy like the 6.2 M156 in the C63. I will try to find some videos of the final exhaust set up (muffler and resonator delete) and post it so everyone can hear.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Awesome, hope you like it! Will take a bit getting used to the drone, but the sound is just great
