ML 350 2006 SD don't read the engine

Hi, could You tell me why SD can test all car system without engine? It is problem after timing gear reparing (with removing engine from car). thanks

Assuming the battery is still in the car and all the control modules are connected the SD will read the control modules, but that is it!
