A high-level delegation from the Kingdom of Bahrain arrived in Malaysia yesterday to attend a comprehensive series of preparatory meetings for the Bahrain Grand Prix 2004 to be held at the state-of- the-art Bahrain Racing Circuit currently under construction and due for completion in March 2004.
The delegation is led by President of the General Organization for Youth and Sports Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. It comprises key strategic and technical personnel including Elie Semaan, Technical Director of the Bahrain Motor Federation, Gordon Calder, Bahrain Racing Circuit Project Manager.
Khalid Abdul Rahim, Chairman of the main Bahrain Racing Circuit contractor Cybarco-WCT joins the group in Malaysia together with Bahraini marshals who attended a larger marshal training program with Confederation of Australian Motor Sport and the Australian Grand Prix earlier this month.
“Malaysia is a fellow Islamic country with five years' experience in hosting the Grand Prix event itself and thousands of international and local racing fans. An important part of our visit to the Sepang Circuit is to share their experience in successfully combining a unique heritage and national traditions with the excitement of the world's most popular racing event.”
Shaikh Fawaz expressed his delight with the progress of the Bahrain Racing Circuit construction.
“Parliament announced its full support of the financing of the project yesterday and work at the site has been consistently ahead of schedule since we began on November 8 2002. 131 days have elapsed with 354 days remaining before the scheduled handover on 7 March 2004. 11.8 percent of all work has been completed, which is 2.2 per cent ahead of the planned construction schedule. The substructure work for all buildings is almost completed and blasting work is almost 70 per cent completed. We currently have 1250 people working at the site.”

Just like most drag strips in the Middle East people race their cars at nice. So as long as the track is lit up at night should be very popular with people driving from neighbouring countries to have a few runs on it.
Who knows they might even start a 24 hour series there.
