2013 ML350 "Check brake pad wear"

Hi!
If breaks are worn, will they squeak like other cars I have owned?

I have about 27,000 miles on my ML. Check brake pad wear light came on. I stopped by a reputable garage and he just eyeballed the brakepads at 30% remaining but He said he would like to remove wheels to check to be sure or could be bad sensor.
He is very busy, can't fit me in now and I'm set to drive 800 - 1000 miles over the next 10 days.

I cannot go to the dealership. They will tell me I need new pads and rotors TODAY and that if I don't do it, brakes will fail and I will be responsible for killing my children in a wreck. Seriously, my dealer is this dramatic.

No squeaking, no difference in performance yet.
I really don't have time to fix now. I am willing to drive the 1000 miles if someone tells me that YES, I will know there is a problem because breaks will make noise when it's time.
Opinions?
Thanks,
Jennifer
