Is the placement of battery in the boot safe?

I had an argument with a co-worker about the car battery being in the boot. He argued that it is wrong and the the fuel tank and the battery are too close to each other. Without backing it up with hard facts, he concluded that European cars will catch fire easily in the event of an accident.

I am not convinced because I think Mercedes must have considered this and I believe there is a good reason why batteries are placed in the boot. Am I right?

I agree with your thinking and there are volumes of internet engineering data to prove the position----let the less learned get off the couch and do some research!!
