Checking Rear Differential Oil

Checking Rear Differential Oil
Does anyone have any experience in checking the rear differential oil in a 97 E320? It looks like the bolt in the fill/inspection hole has a recessed hex head. The size of the hex is about 12 or 13 mm. I can't find a hex wrench that big. Does MB sell a special tool for this? Any help would be appreciated.

I think it's a 14 mm hex wrench. You should be able to get one from your local auto supply store.
Tip: If you decide to change the fluid, make sure you are able to remove the fill plug first before removing the drain plug. The fill plug threads corrode faster than the drain plug threads.

Thanks for the info. The tip is a good one, I had an 85 Toyota Supra years ago and found out the hard way about needing to remove the fill plug first. Do you know what MB recommends for differential oil weight and brand? I usually use 75W-90W non synthetic, Castrol brand.

Mercedes requires 75-W90 GL-5 fully synthetic hypoid gear oil. I recommend staying with synthetic. It gives you the best bang for the buck. The synthetic helps with increasing fuel mileage... at least enough to cover the premium charged for the 1-2 quarts of synthetic.
