Advice on upgrading a 2007 ML63 Comand head unit

I just bought a one owner 2007 ML63 AMG with 27,000km, a silver exterior and a light grey interior. This is my first Mercedes and I am very excited about my new purchase which I should be receiving this Friday. The First thing I would like to upgrade is the head unit. I know the 2009 and newer models have built in Bluetooth and from what I've read they have a better iPod interface. I also know that mObridge and a few other companies make fiber optic integration kits which have both Bluetooth and iPod connections. The cheapest price I've seen for the mObridge product is $800 and I have seen the 2009+ head units for around $1200 on Ebay. Is it possible/practical to replace my head unit with one out of a 2009+ vehicle? If so, is it a matter of disconnecting mine and plugging in the new one? What should I be looking out for when buying the replacement unit? Do the European units work in North American vehicles? I tried asking my dealer these questions and they looked at me like I was from the moon. If upgrading the head unit isn't practical how hard is it to install the mObridge system? From what I can tell it looks like a plug and play system. I've tried finding some information on this and have had very little luck. There is one shop in my city that installs mObridge and they want $1,000 for the system and another $500 for the install. I am fairly handy and I'm sure that I can do it myself with the proper guidance. From the little that I have heard I doubt that it will take 5 hours to install so I find $500 for installation a bit steep. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
