I need a code reader/scanner just to read the code and turn off the engine light.

It must be compatible with a 2008 ML63 but just, as I described, a basic unit.

Reason: gas cap open light comes on all the time. It is tight, 3 clicks and all that, yet is not seated properly. Shortly after the gas cap message the engine light illuminates and I can't have the mechanic shut it off as he's a tank of gas away. So cheaper to have my own basic diagnostic and the ability to turn it off myself.

So can anyone recommend a specific scanner for an 08 ML63?

It can read the codes and reset your check engine light.

Really depends on the OP's budget and future plans, the NT624 will scan All Makes and All Codes.

why not just buy a new gas cap, they're not as expensive as a scanner?

Thanks, much appreciated. As to the new gas cap, first thing I too thought of. Research on this board suggested to me that a new gas cap had proved fruitless.
