Many ML's have basically had the same Fuel Gauge problem since 99', and to make matters worse, the Fuel Gauge sensor is incorporated into the fuel pump. That is why it cost so much to repair.
Or you can ignore it, just write your mileage down when filling up and keep mental tab's on how much fuel you have used.
