Remote key fob wont work, locks work fine with console button, dealer

Have they told you why it's going to be a grand? What are they saying is wrong. Without this information it's impossible to determine if you're getting screwed (or more screwed if that's possible) by the dealer. Could be anything from the fob to the CAN module to the sensors on the doors. You haven't provided anything about year type of ML (55 or 350) or where you live. '01 ML55, new key fobs didn't fix it, told it was the All Activity Module, $1100 to fix. Live in Maryland. Key works in the door and switch in center console works as well.

They are replacing the AAM. How did they arrive at the conclusion that it was bad? Star diagnostics or a guess. If you are getting operation manually ( from the console and the key itself) but not working wirelessly I'd look at the AAM first. Good luck.
