Alternator or Voltage Regulator?

Got the big red battery symbol about a month ago. Made mistake number 1 by replacing battery unnecessarily...mb dealer says could be a loose diode and need to replace alternator - $1900 CDN. Before I make another mistake, can I try to replace the voltage regulator first?

Thanks for any help

Seems similar to my problem. I have had two episodes now with the symbol... yesterday I posted my problem and intended to take the car to the shop after work, but after work the voltage was 13.7 - 13.9 range, and was again fine in the morning. Did you ever find the cause for your problem?

Light has not appeared since, however, symptoms persist. Upon acceleration, voltage drops to 12 for about 5 sec then back up to 14 when I release gas pedal. It then settles at 13.9. The morning issues I first wrote about disappeared. I have a full time amg mechanic friend who works at a mb dealer telling me that a combination of cold weather and a probable faulty regulator is the culprit. I also have two faulty maf sensors that were throwing a check engine light code that sort of confused me at the time but was told that the issues are unrelated. After 109,000 kms these are my first issues so I should not complain I guess. I was told to not worry about it until probably next winterror unless the issue reappears and we will then try the regulator fix.
