Hey guys I'm pretty new to this forum as a member so I'll lay it all out pretty straightforward. I have a 16' GLE63s 4matic currently on a Renntech tune, downpipes, and BMC filters. I've done before and after dyno runs and attached both of em. I've also used a Vbox Sport to get specific when it comes to numbers. 0-100kph 4.07 seconds and 1/4 mile I ran 12.06 @183.8kph. Now I am very pleased with my results from Renntech so I am aiming for an m157 stage II and bigger intercooler/pump upgrade. They have repeatedly claimed that the stock transmission does not require any mechanical upgrades to enforce that much torque on the new upgrades however I am a little worried. Has anyone tried their 722.9 transmission upgrade? Does it really help with shift times and lower rpm acceleration? If anyone wants to ask why I'm doing this to a 2.5 ton suv? Just for the fun of it..

The love here can be a bit slow at times... I get your question, I too get a lot of why bother just drive it stock, but its a twin turbo V8 SUV, who doesn't want to make it go faster and for the cost of a tune - BOOM!

Anyhow, no idea on the transmission tune, interested to know how you get on. I found my transmission seems to be getting a little clunky (that said its getting colder now too), I'm going to put the stock ECU back in tonight see how it goes, no expecting to see a difference.

Yea I feel you about that love though lol.. Renntech has a 722.9 transmission upgrade and so do weistec. I'm thinking about Renntech stage II so I'm probably going to look into their uograde����

Are you actually having problem with transmission or is precaution to potential future problems?


I was also advised by various tuners that no modifications were required to the Gearbox to handle an ECU Tune, it was only when we started to look at bigger turbos etc that transmission modifications may be required.

The stage II turbochargers and bigger intercooler/pump are on their way as we speak. I have also gotten in contact with Renntech and my transmission is being shipped to them for their 722.9 upgrade to handle the extra torque.

Updated Vbox times without passenger and launched correctly:

0-60mph: 3.88 sec
0-62mph: (0-100kph) 4.01 sec
1/4 mile: 11.97 @115.26mph

The acceleration numbers seem close to stock numbers run by Car & Driver. What were the weather conditions and altitude when you ran?

Dry cool cali night weather. IMO and personal experience driving many MB cars troughout my life each AMG car performs slightly different bc of them being handled by one mechanic or engineer. Those numbers are slightly exaggerated too.

I don't know if the C&D numbers are exaggerated or not, but MB usually lists some pretty conservative 0-60 mph times (probably a function of MB not using any roll-out in attaining the times).

I also have a vbox and do my own testing of my vehicles. Are you using the raw vbox acceleration data without regard to any "roll-out"? If you are not using roll-out, that would knock a couple of tenths off the times to compare to magazine data. But the 1/4 mile trap speed still seems fairly low for what I would expect from downpipes and tune.

Infact I do have that option toggled on. This is a 2.5 ton suv you're talking about here. Honestly I own alot of MB cars, (check my instagram Bisli) and I'm quite happy with the results. I'll be posting more after new upgrades. Thanks for the feedback!

On my w166 ml63 I have 680hp and about 1'050 Nm of torque which is limited ...
I was told by my tuner and brabus confirmed the info that below that power/torque no problem for the stock transmission...

Above upgrade is vital...

I've seen W166 and X166 run torque above 708 lb-ft and be fine. Long-term, only time will tell.

For daily driver and long-term reliability, I don't think any tuner has bigger R&D and deeper pockets than Brabus. Their techs limit the torque to 708 lb-ft of torque for a daily driver, to be driven all day at high speeds and be reliable.

Can you push more, I'm sure - but anything more, personally I'd do the Weistec bulletproof transmission upgrade that is good for up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

yea figured with that much torque and it being my daily I went through with it lol had it shipped to RT Florida.

I already spoke with the techs at RT and they actually said I do not need the upgrade however they still thought it is mandatory for long term use just to be cleared from any headaches later on.. I am also going to have two separate Ecu's with different maps to swap for a full out tune when needed. I think with the full race tune I'll be pushing the trans over the edge without any upgrade.
