GAS MILAGE

Somewhat disappointed as to the gas mileage. with 1600 miles and premium fuel, I am averaging around 15.9, city. With a combined city and highway, 18.9. Strictly highway, 20.1. I am really thinking that these numbers are pretty low. I was just wondering what others were getting as to their averages.

Another factor to consider is the age and low mileage of the engine - I've noticed on all of my cars that as the engine 'runs in' over a range of 10,000-15,000 miles, the fuel consumption noticeable improves. YMMV of course as it's my personal observation with no data points. The ML350 petrol is rated 17/22 for efficiency so I think you'll approach these manufacturer's numbers soon.

My ml 550 is getting 19 mpg about 60 /40 hwy city with 1,500 miles on odometer I expect it to get some what better as miles go up. I drove an 09 Touraeg with 285 horsepower V-6 and it averaged 16.5. I feel ok with the mileage especially with all the power this motor has. It drinks gas by the keg when I drive it hard though, normal for a turbo.

My diesel is getting around 25 in the city. On a recent trip from Florida to Pennsylvania I got between 30 and 31. That was almost all highway.

I'm averaging around 24 mpg in suburban driving with my Bluetec (per the on board computer), and I drive relatively aggressively.

I think the mileage difference between the gas and diesel versions is considerably larger in real life than what the EPA estimates.

This past weekend I drove 5 people(including myself) from Toronto to Washington DC. With a full car, luggage and all (I could barely see out the back) I averaged 30mpg hand calculated. I'm suitably impressed!

This is a post from a while ago, I have since hit 28.5 - Its not a big deal to me anymore. Just a couple extra miles I can go.

I don't do a lot of highway drive actual barely any really. When I do the ML does very well and I am very happy with it.

Yesterday it took me about 1 hour to get home in bad traffic (stop and go) and I still average 20.5 mpg.

For all you who spoke out numbers about someone with gas only getting 14.9 or 15 mpg. There is a lot more to it than that - if she has a short drive to work it will not be a high number. If someone has a diesel or gas regardless if you are doing a lot of short drives you will not have a impressive number because the calculations do not work that way - measurement of time & distance et.cc

I have had days where I had to rush somewhere speed off at every light and drive more aggressive and still don't avg. below 19 - 20 mpg.

Typical week I average 24.5

Nothing is deceiving about it really.

From Today.

Drove 120 miles and averaged 30.0 MPG at the end. I didn't get a picture of the 30.0 because my fiance became very frustrated with me taking pictures while driving. This is 100% highway, and when we arrived home my range states 630 miles.

I wasn't going to post anything, however the specific forum members comments are becoming very bias about the engine choices and speaking on which obviously they know nothing about. People who are looking to make a choice on their next car should maybe see the facts on what the GAS engine is, I know personally it is a wonderfully fast engine with great MPG as seen below. I am not steering anyone who is looking to buy a specific way - however I will continue to provide facts and information to those who continously post comments in which are false. Some of the comments above made me laugh -

The crazy thing is that I have talked to diesel members either at stop lights, parking lots or at the dealer and there is not ONE that is getting better MPG than I am. After witnessing this do I come on the forums talking about how false the claims are by the EPA of the diesel engine? No. Do I come and talk about how I know people with BlueTECs that are averaging less than the EPA claim? No. You or I do not know their driving habits or thier commuting statistics. Truth is I had a ML BlueTec - My dealer allowed me to take one home I know how a BlueTec sounds, feels, drives and of course the MPG. I had my reasons to why I didn't go with the BlueTec, I am happy with my choice. As I am hoping that everyone else is happy with their choice of engine for their ML. I will continue to hope that instead of creating a debate on engine options most of the time, members on this ML forum can work together as a team and truthfully answer the questions each has and assist future buyers in purchasing a vehicle that fits their lifestyle.

32 miles at 56 mph will of course give you pretty much the best mpg reading you will ever see. Jump on the highway and increase your speed to 70 or into the city for some stop and go driving and that number will drop significantly.

My 08 diesel once gave me 1150 km (700+ miles) on a single tank when I did a long rural trip doing lots of driving at that ideal 90 km/hr (55 mph) speed.

Do that exact drive you did yesterday in a diesel ML and no doubt the results would have been at least 10-15% better.

The good news is you love your gas engine and so do I. Loved my 08 CDi too but my brief stint in a 2012 BlueTec was marred by the cold engine hesitation issue so I jumped into the 550 (which gets horrible fuel economy but my annual fuel costs are insignificant as I have a very short commute).

I don't understand what your first two points mean? I will give it a try though.

1. I was on the highway - Speed limit was 65, I went 65 mph. Why do I need to go 70 mph?

2. I understand what you are saying. Other than electric/hybrid vehicles doesn't every car drop in mpg in city traffic? What are you trying to prove? I never said that my mpg goes up in stop and go traffic...

3. I did mention that it was a 120 mile trip right?

I guess you didn't read what I stated earlier. It's fine. Although, I never said the diesel couldn't do better.

This we can agree on.

I drive 65% traffic everyday to and from work and still average mid 20s.

This car is not new to me I have over 8,000 miles on it. I know how to drive it.

Your photo shows an average speed of 56, not 65 and there is a huge difference in economy at 65.

If you aren't too busy this afternoon, go and drive 120+ miles at 65 and THEN take a photo of your screen showing the mpg with average speed of 65. If you can average 30 or better, your next tank of fuel is on me, I'll paypal you the money.

Its 56 because I didn't start off on the highway, I started in a urban area - city actually.

If you really want to be technical - I would have to exceed speeds OVER 65 to have an average (middle/center) of 65 mph right? I didn't go over 65 much and I most def. didn't go over 70 mph.

There is slowing in congested areas and when other vehicles merge on the highway - by the way this is I-95. I think 56 is about right. In some areas the speed limit is only 55 mph. I go the speed limit.

If it comes to a point were I need to take a 2 hour drive again I will send you a pic, so I can get a $100 tank of gas. I am a cheap *** - free is always good. Yes, frugal with a 60K vehicle.
