I just don't think similar pricing makes the Macan and the M-Class competitors. They clearly have different missions. The M-Class, due to it's utility, will appeal to a much broader audience. The Macan is a niche vehicle, intentionally, as are all Porsches. Just for comparison, the following are the cargo volumes in cu. ft. (2nd row seats up/2nd row seats folded) of several vehicles (not necessarily competitors):
Macan S 17.7/53.0
Audi Q5 29.1/57.3
Mercedes E-Class wagon 20.5/57.4
Mercedes M-Class 38.2/80.3
Mercedes GLK-Class 16.5/54.7
On cargo volume the Macan and the GLK would be cross-shopped, but I can't imagine that actually happening. The Q5 seems like a likely competitor (and they are on the same platform after all).

In my household, we cross shop Macan/Cayenne with X5 and ML because my wife wants a grocery go-getter that sit up high but don't need the trunk space. If you look at the front and rear passenger space between the Macan and ML, they are not really that much difference. The width of the Macan's exterior is 1 inch wider than the ML and length is only less than 5 inches shorter.
Anyway, there will be people who want the performance but don't need that much trunk space. Now the base Cayenne is going to pricing out the range of the typical ML and I think people who are thinking about the Cayenne will look at the Macan.

As I stated in my Post #34, I lease a GLK350, so I know full well what it is. I also stated above that, regarding cross-shopping the GLK vs. Macan, "I can't imagine that actually happening".
You will also note that in that post I state that I personally don't think an SUV with limited space makes any sense. There are far more efficient ways to get passenger space room and great handling. Just my .02 cents.

For argument sake, I can make a statement such as: "Buying ML350 makes no sense since it is so small with very limited space compare to a Mercedes GL or Cadillac Escalade." I don't think i can agree with that statement...
Space is relative to your needs. My wife wants something sit higher up than a sedan/wagon for better view of the traffic but wants something run in the low 5's in 0-60 with great handling. She also wants the trunk tell enough to hold a bike or some luggage. Lastly, she wants the car from Europe with a nice badge/heritage. There are really not many options under $60K.

If you wife is coming from the MKX and have those criteria, I can totally see the Macan is not a good fit for her. I totally agree with her that Macan needs to be driven hard (probably not all the time) and not a pure grocery getter.
My wife is more performance/brand oriented and she actually was the original driving force behind the Macan before I warmed up to it. She always wants a SUV but she hates the handling of them (in our price range). That's why all her cars so far are sport sedans.
Frankly, I was actually hoping to buy an used CPO Porsche Panamera 4S (still do) to replaced on R500 but well.... not going to happened. Maybe we will replaced our C300 with next the Porsche's smaller sedan.

Porsche marketing department is really good.

Not unless you strip the bike down or lay it on it's side. Somehow you missed my entire point of why I bought the ML. I took our bikes to the dealerships (M-B, BMW, Audi, Porsche, GM, Honda) and tried to load and store them vertically by only removing the front wheels. FYI, I needed 36" clear height at the saddle to do so. Only the ML and minivans could accommodate that, not even the Tahoe/Suburban, for the reason I stated in Post #34.
And yes, Chesapeake, Virginia is in the US.
Enough is enough. Moving on. Cheers.

I like the Macan and probably would drive one if I was single w/o kids, but I just decided to stop drinking the sports SUV Kool Aid, and this comes from someone that drove a 958 Cayenne GTS for the last two years.
But hey, to each his own. Drive it in good health and dont push it too hard.

Not bad for a 5,200 lbs slug.
My point is that it is designed for straight line performance and not precise handling, I love the ML63, a practical comfortable everyday SUV with a lot of punch.
Any idiot can drop a monster engine on any car, but handling is what defines a sports car.

The ML63 is a comfortable and practical muscle SUV that does its job very well without pretending to be a sports car. (Very far from that btw)

Cannot agree with you more on the Cayenne GTS. I was considering the 2014 Loaded Cayenne S with a sticker price of $94K. I totally hated it and I will take a ML550 over it any day of this decade with that price.
If you have not driven the Macan, try it and it is a totally different ball game.

Actually with it lowered and in sport+ with the 21's and 295's it handles surprisingly well and add some goodies like member EVO ll has and it will surprise many sports cars on the track

Seriously, I will take a ML63 any day over a Macan S/turbo. The price is just out of our budget range.

I will be offended by your statement if I am "Frank".

I apologize if I didnt chose my words wisely, consider that English is not my mother language and something that sounds good in my head it doesnt when written.
To help smooth things up, heres a pic of my proper sports car. I'd love do a track run with nanook

Yup I'd have a go at that...bring it up here in December and we'll run the lake track with a little cross country thrown in with 3' of snow...towing a snowmobile trailer...with 5 people inside ...and a husky in the back

No offense intended, just a different point of view.

I had a quick test drive of it and beside the 918, I think the 991 is the best car that Porsche has ever built. Great job!
