2014 ML550 14/19 with 16 combined
2015 ML400 18/22 with 20 combined

so whatever you're getting with the ML550, add 4MPG more for the ML400. Not sure how anyone could even try to claim that it could be better for an Ml550 since it's a V8.

The ML400 actually has better fuel economy than the ML350...

Wow, you're more american than you realize.

Again, MB has not been shy about their proclamations that Euro mileage standards are handcuffing them, not US. Look at the assortment of absolutely ridiculously high displacement muscle cars coming out of US manufacturers. You can't even take euro delivery of many MB suv's.
If diesel torque is enough to get an ML up to speed, where it can then sip fuel, go for it. people who own them really like them. I've owned two tree-hugging hybrids in my life, both were beyond anemic, but functional, and there's a certain elegance to 50mpg.

I personally don't care about fuel efficiency. It's all a matter of perspective in any case. I can haul most of a volleyball team and all their equipment in comfortable elegance in my two ML550's and with far greater fuel efficiency than the 7 smart cars that I'd have to use simultaneously to accomplish the same task. Let's face it - if you really are worried about fuel economy....you're probably a KIA shopper anyways. MB is all about the power and quality. Fuel economy is nice....and it's great to have "reasonable" fuel economy....but class, power and elegance will ALWAYS cost you something. My ML550's get FAR great gas mileage than my Escalades. Having said that, my daughter's Chevy Cruz with the 1.3L turbo is amazingly powerful and fuel efficient.....and it is a surprisingly safe and capable vehicle. The Mercedes B series is probably also very nice....but SO UGLY it is an affront to look at it......

The day I test drove the disappointing gla45, the salesman walked me past the only B series on the lot. it obviously took it's design cues from the ugliest car ever made by MB, the R class.

The salesman just started slamming the thing..."it's so ugly, it's a stupid vehicle, performance is bad, range is bad, overpriced..."
I stopped and looked at it.."you know, I have a solar array on my house, I could add ten more panels and charge that car for free. tax credits and incentives would pay off the panels well within the life of the car".
"you know, if you can charge it for free it's a great little car, want to drive it?"

well...no..you just gave me half a dozen reasons to buy a tesla....

All it takes is a discussion of efficiency to bring the ignorant statements out in full force. It's fun to **** away the Earth's natural resources... fortunately every other Canadian I have known doesn't seem to share this 1970's Alabama sentiment.

I've owned a smart, and I won't own anything with more than 4 cylinders given a choice. Surprisingly, fuel economy isn't really a ranking factor in any of my purchases...

You know what they say about guys who drive loud, jacked up trucks...

Love my ML550 and just decided I am buying it out at the end of the lease in March since I am so far below the mileage limit and its in perfect condition. What else can I buy for $44k with a biturbo V8, distronic cruise, airmatic suspension and all the other toys it has?? With less than 30,000 kms and garage kept it still looks brand new!

I might throw a GLE 550 logo on the back next spring and it will still look like its brand new for another few years.

I did price out a new ML 400 and don't see the logic in switching.

Great plan.. minus the GLE badging... the only badges that belong are the ones it came with. Anyone who knows you have whats new also knows that mis-badged vehicles are a joke. Enjoy you 550!

It was a joke but speaking of rebadging you might want to get a 550 badge for that little 4 banger oil burner...
