Bluetecs, are we getting scammed?
Okay, I admit to just a bit of a conspiratorial mindset ... but - it's not crazy if it's true, right?
Mobil1 in 0-40 weight (229.5) in the 5 quart jug sells for $26.88 at Wal-Mart.
But they don't have (can't get) Mobil1 0-30 ESP (229.51) which the MB dealers have for $8.09 per quart ($40.45 if a 5 quart jug was available).
Is it possible that Mobil/Exxon and MB are collu ..... talking about this?
Is MB getting preferred pricing or exclusivity by creating spec #229.51 on the specified weight?
I hope someone will show me where the pricing is wrong and ESP 0-30 is under $6 per quart.
(Even at 10k oil changes, it ticks me off.)
Where's a class action attorney when you need one?

You don't have to use Mobil1. There are a lot of quality 229.51 oils available. Shop around a bit.
Here is the list to start from http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.51_en.html
I just made the switch to another oil. A couple are available on Amazon with free shipping.
Edited to add: Be sure to check for the 229.51 spec on the label. I do not believe Walmart sells any oil that meets that spec. PLEASE NOTE, athough Castrol Edge is listed on the MB spec sheet, it is ONLY the Castrol Edge produced and marketed in Europe, not the one for sale in Walmart.
(This info is from a family member that formulates oils at Castrol.)

The Mobil1 5w30 EPS is available from Amazon. Also my local O'Reilly car parts store. Mgr did not have it in stock but ordered a case from their warehouse. Also can buy from local MB for $9/qt. No big deal !

You're reading it wrong, think bigger picture, like MB & Mobil increasing the revenue of every transaction by roughly 30% across a broad base of bluetec customers.

Wow ! I don't want to get into the conspiracy aspect, but the field of oil vendors is getting wider: Motul, Total Quartz INEO, Pentosin, Liquimoly,, Lubromoly, Penzoil, Fuchs, Castrol Edge, Mobil One, etc come to mind. Plus the number of weight products 0w30, 5w30, 5w40. Use any to all and mix, as long as they meet the (new) MB 229.52 and older MB 229.51 specifications.
It rates an inquiry to local MB dealers and Dodge dealers as to what they will sell the compliant oils (Mobil One) as they normally buy in bulk (barrels) and most will sell you by volume (I have heard as low as $4.50 per L) if you BYO container/s. I say buy on price.

Well.. I don't engage in conspiracy theories -... if you what to brain burn about something - feel free to ask your dealer next time what oil they use - since dealers buy their oil for their service bays in bulk barrels - and "most" buy non-brand oil that meets spec - and NOT buy the branded oil..

I rang my dealer this morning to see what grade of oil my ML with 10,800kms on the clock required and they said swing past and they would top it up, dropped in and it took 3.2L of oil. I was a little surprised they did not charge a cent for the top up, was even more surprised when the service rep told me they all do this and its not uncommon.

Mine was at 75% at 16k km's (10k mi) and it caused me to put a 2,500 mile reminder in outlook.

If you are 3L low, will anything show on the dipstick? More importantly I would want to know where that oil is going. Certainly not burning it so there must be a leak.

Actually its $14 difference per 5 quarts. Since we need 9-10 quarts - its more like $28. This is the price to pay for driving a premium vehicle.
I do what samaritrey does - stock up when napa or mobil1 does a promo. By the way - do not store unused oil in freezing temps. It degrades. But im not 100% sure if the same happens to synthetic oils tho.
