New windsheild and new skins

As the local trails have pretty much been cleaned of the winter crud I couldn't hold out any longer and got a new windsheild installed today as well as a fresh set of PZeros...some may recall I made a big stink to my dealer last year about the poor performance (longevity) of the Pirellis and they arranged a greet, meet and whine with the territorial Pirelli rep..very nice chap. I explained I knew the tire was performing to spec but was somewhat disappointed in 5000kms (okay more or less..more) of life...you know..squeaky zirk gets greased...and without asking (directly) he was kind enough to offer up a pair gratis...so i obliged and threw a new set on (4)..good for another 5k kms (egad)..

And the windshield I think is a dealer thingy only..no other shops would even entertain a quote as they had to get the screen from dealer so for $1,200 Cdn I'm the proud owner of my 2nd new screen..and I learnt a few tidbits..like the dealer subs the install out..and charged for re-programming ...rain sense/headlight high beam controller / lane assist..that stuff in the center sensor unit..$250 to re-program..huh??..and was good enough to charge me to install a MB sticker on the lower passenger side that I neither asked for nor wanted but it's there now..for $15..oh and may as well get new blades for $60..
At least I got a new 300 to drive for free...right...nothing is free...I'm certain it's cost is in there somewhere...oh and let's not forget the $25 incidental shop supplies..$4 per tire tire tax ..I'm sure if I looked close enough I'd find the windshield and tire disposal costs.. ...but I did get some good eats and coffees at the barista bar..
Yes it costs to play king...but it's fun..now come next spring...rinse and repeat

Please satisfy my curiosity and explain why you need a new windscreen on such a new car? I live in Australia so don't experience winters like you do.

Winter is generally the culprit as TONS of sand and coarse rock is spread on the roads/hwys which creates most of the issues..pitting and rock strikes plus just the general construction, gravel hauling etc leaves plenty of crap on the roads..

Like this guy spreading road rash that I met on the bridge and he never even stopped the spreader.. turn up the audio and you'll hear the impacts..(and an explicit)

Nanook,

Windshields aren't covered in your auto insurance in Canada? I had mine replaced by a local autoglass shop that was arranged by my insurance company. They ordered the glass from the local dealer and installed at my house. No reprogramming of the sensors was needed. With my coverage, not even a deductible, so $0 out of pocket for me.

I think your dealer was screwing with you for the $250 programming fee IMO

I ended up going with Michelin Latitude Sports back when my Continentals wore out. I like them so far. From the Michelin website, these are basically Michelin PS2s just in truck tire sizes.

Glass coverage is very expensive and only a claim where the screen becomes unusable/hazardous would be covered with a deductible to boot..
I'll ask for a better explanation on the programming fee/procedure as the service manager will be contacting me to dicuss the mess they left standing on the driver/passenger door thresholds
I would have opted for a Michelin had Pirelli not be paying for two...next time maybe

interesting that glass coverage is separate there. Here it is part of the comprehensive coverage that covers everything that isn't a collision. they also include free glass repair for the smaller cracks but I prefer to replace the entire windscreen. My last one was a big crack though that spanned almost the entire width of the vehicle.

Coverage is included only for vandalism/b&e...but you can add it to your policy..it's just too expensive when you consider the premium and deductible and increase with claims....and the other day I asked if my roof was covered and my carrier didn't reply..is your roof covered ?...say for heat failure ?..pretty gray area

There are some carrier specific companies like AMI that solely offer glass coverage..I use them for my Vette (rear window)...I must look into the ML roof...

This windshield that I just replaced had 3 repairs..two cracks and one star..each time they drill an injection site for the resin..cracks at both ends..not the best

I never asked about the ML roof but I would assume that it is covered. All the other glass (windshield, side/rear windows) is covered. I just renewed my policy last week and comprehensive coverage was only $66 for the 6 month period.
