2000 ML430 coolant temperature sensor won't stay in

I'm sorry i posted this in the wrong forum. I have since listed this in the ML forum.
I'm replacing my water pump, thermostat, and coolant temperature sensor and have run into a rather confusing problem and hope that someone here can help me out. I've got the water pump, thermostat and coolant temp sensor all removed and am installing the new temp sensor. Problem is that it won't stay in. The clip slides on but doesn't hold it in place. The clip doesn't seem to do anything at all. The sensor just pulls right out with no resistance whatsoever. Does the water pump need to be installed first. I'm at a loss. Someone please enlighten me. I'm usually pretty good at this stuff but I need help. Thank you in advance.

Wrong temp sensor? Pics would help. Good luck and good for you for performing your own maintenance.

figured it out

The water pump has to be installed first. The pin goes behind the lip of the water pump and that hold out in place. Ill be reinstalling the radiator today and we'll see if it holds water.
