I'm not sure if it is just that part of the windshield but that is where mine was (although it went all the way across instead of turning up). The part took 25 days to get from Germany. MY insurance company did pay for MB glass as the car is so new.
Good luck.

Having trouble with State Farm - the car's not even on their list yet of glass.

Have an appointment with Mercedes on Wednesday so this will get replaced then. They have a windshield waiting for me there thankfully.

I can't tell if the crack is now getting bigger or not - is it safe to drive? Or is this thing going to come apart on me?

How the heck do they have a windshield waiting for you? Do you have MBC on that car? I ask as the camera housing that is on the glass is different for the MBC which I believe is why mine needed to be shipped from Germany.

I used State Farm. Their glass replacement folks handled this for my car. The agent had to talk to her supervisor but she came back and sad they would authorize replacing the glass with MB glass since it was so new.

Oh. I was concerned about it coming apart but I think the laminate keeps it together well, However, you have more challenging roads than I do. I know I went over speed bumps very carefully just to be safe. The Belt Parkway might just shake the car enough to do some damage. Someone that knows more about auto glass would have to tell us what it takes to break the laminate.

Chucky--I doubt it will come apart. About 25 years ago I used to work for PPG Industries. PPG spun off PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works). PGW makes our S550 glass. I know the testing that goes into windshield glass. The laminate is very strong so that when the whole windshield cracks in a million pieces it all stays together. So I believe you should be fine.

Funny story about glass testing--I worked out of the Pittsburgh Headquarters of PPG 25 years ago (I have had my own investment/tax/financial planning business since then). I spent some time in Huntsville, Alabama, where at the time, PPG tested airplane glass. They would shoot frozen chickens out of a cannon type device at airplane windshields to simulate airplane windshields getting hit by birds--it was pretty cool. Now I never saw frozen chickens hit the windshield of a car but this is the type of testing that goes on.

MB Manhattan had them on backorder - and just got in a shipment. One of them was put aside for me when I called in. I do have MBC.

Will see what happens. I'll keep everyone posted.

My dealer has 3 S class sitting in back waiting for new windshields. They seem to crack rather easily. That's coming from them.

No longer a 2015 S63 owner though.

Heard a rock hit last night as I was driving.
\
Woke up to this.

Then as i was driving.

I heard a crunching glass noise and it turned into this.

Dropped it off at dealers to be replaced along with the broken window switches and Service A done.

$2645 was the quote for the replacement. $1000 deductable for insurance. Not sure if it is worth filing a claim.

I have averaged one new windshield a year since 2000 on my S Class cars due to rock chips/cracks. I have not replaced the windshield in my '14 S Class yet but based on my record between now and February mine will need to be replaced since I took delivery this February.

I can't figure it out. My wife's 2008 Acura MDX, that she loves to drive, has 100,000 miles on it. It still has the original windshield. And every S class I have owned since 2000 has had a replacement windshield every year.

I do carry comprehensive insurance on my car with a $250 deductible for glass breakage. Glass breakage does not count toward claims history with my insurance company. So I figure with one replacement windshield every year, my insurance company is making no money on my S Class policy since my yearly premiums are less then the cost of replacing my windshield. But don't worry, my insurance company is making money from all the other premiums I pay for a three story office building where my business is located, by other business insurance, my house insurance, and other cars insurance. But my S class insurance I am getting a bargain due to my yearly routine of a new windshield (of course I would rather not have to replace the windshield every year but like Hyperion stated, our windshields must "suck").

Maybe an after market windshield can be a better choice. I wonder with one of those my garage door opener, radar detector and Sun Pass may actually work better.

Really?? Doubt it.

I am pretty certain there are no aftermarket windshields for MY '14 and '15 S Class. If there are any, they would be made by the same company--PGW (spinoff of PPG Industries) not Pilkington and with the same standards with Infrared, etc. This glass is way to encompassing with the camera's to want to buy junk even if a glass company would want to manufacture the glass.

In fact, on my '08 S550 4Matic, Safelight Solutions is the vendor for my insurance company to process glass claims and they would always buy the glass from the local MB dealer to have it installed. To my knowledge there were no non-MB after market windshields for my '08 S class. Would you really want an off-beat brand of windshield on a $100k+ car? I doubt it. You get what you pay for. I believe windshield chips on the S Class have much to do with the low profile and the shape of the front of the car.

Sorry to see what happened to your windshield. Manhattan told me they're seeing a lot of this.

WTF?

The thought did occur to me.
BTW, I would never replace an OEM windshield with an inferior one. But if a superior windshield existed I would consider it as a replacement.

The chip isn't the problem, the problem is that tiny chip will turn into a crack along the entire winshield. Something is wrong with this glass because I've never had a chip turn into a 24" crack.

Your lucky!

Every S Class I have had since 2000 has produced atleast a 12" crack shortly after the chip. I have replaced one windshield per year in my S Class cars since 2000. I remember this since my insurance company asks me every time the size of the crack since they want to repair the windshield vs. replacing it if it is smaller then a dollar bill.

So under the thought that there is something wrong with the glass I would have to say that in my case there has been something wrong with the S Class cars glass since 2000.

I had to wait 21 days for the part to come from Germany when mine was replaced. Seriously, if you hear something hit the windshield, stop as soon as you can and check. If you see a chip, drive as fast as you can to the nearest glass repair place and have them fix the chip. It was 3 hours from the hit to an 18 inch crack in my windshield. By the end of the day, the crack was across the whole of the passenger side (fortunately I could still drive it and Florida requires the insurance company to pay the whole thing).
