Question On the S550 coupe, does the Sport button change the Exhaust/Exhaust note?

Hello all. New here. I'm going to test drive the new S550 coupe this weekend. I've read one review that says the sport button changes the note, opens the exhaust. I looked online at a manual and there is nothing there about that change.

Can anybody confirm if that actually happens?

I have a Maserati GT Sport and need a little RAWR from my car.

Thanks

I have the S63 Coupe (also test drove the S550 Coupe) and honestly, it's still pretty quiet (when compared to say your GranTurismo) with Comfort and even Sport Mode. It's supposed to open up the exhaust valve when you switch it to Sport mode. Still, it's the ultimate luxury car and the S550 is a real stunner. The interior is INSANELY BEAUTIFUL.

Thanks. I sat in one that was sold on the lot.. the interior really is on another lvl. I'm just not sure if I can live without the growl of the GT Sport.

Right now I'm between a Ghibli QS4 and the S550. We'll see after the test drive.

Thanks again

why not get the Benz and mod the exhaust to your liking? beats the hell out of a Ghibli......those things are (warning, opinion) heinous!!!!!

Removing the resonators might be the perfect fix!

That's what I'm thinking. Have to research easy options for doing that. I tend to keep my cars for a year, so want to be able to flip it back easily.

As for the ghibli, I love the outside, just concerned about a lot of the quality issues it's been having.

I've always heard Maserati's are the worst, but if you are only keeping it a year, no worries.

The S550 coupe sounds the same, no matter what settings.

I know that the new GT-AMG has exhaust settings, but not the S-Class Coupe

Both the S550C and S63C have the variable exhaust. There is a flap which opens at certain engine speeds. The opening is earlier in S/M mode vs E mode.

I'm not a huge Maserati fan (bc they are slow) but in terms of exhaust note they are way up there in stock form.

I drove the S550 Coupe yesterday and switching from E to S changes the exhaust note in accordance with the driving dynamics dramatically. Much louder in Sport mode.

Thanks for the input so far. Was able to find a dealer who has one this week to drive. Going on thursday night to get the, hopeful, earful. I'll be back to fill in my thoughts.

The Ghibli SQ4 I ordered just arrived at my dealer this week. So going to check it out on saturday. Being about $45k cheaper... unless the S550 blows me away, I won't mind too much not getting it.

We'll see.

Yep, cause they use Ferrari engines

The Ferrari engine in there is going to make you buy it It sounds incredible. Would you at least post pictures of it when you see it this week?

I wish the S coupe sounded like that^

Can you please share where that info is coming from?

I checked and the S63 AMG exhaust has indeed the variable flaps that one is S/M mode. I can't find any info re. the S550C nor did the car sound different when driving it in C versus S (i didn't listen to it standing though...)

From Yahoo! Autos:

Kick it up a notch (and activate “sport” modes of both the powertrain and air suspension) and the S550 shrinks a size, exhibiting a surprising athleticism through in the responsiveness of the 449-hp 4.7-liter engine, aggressive exhaust note, predictive downshifts of its seven-speed automatic, and linear, well-weighted steering. It is effortlessly fast, with virtually no turbo lag and a very fat powerband, with all 516 lb-ft of torque available at just 1,800 rpm.

The S550 Coupe 100% includes dynamic exhaust flaps. In Sport they are open and sound much better. It is the first non-AMG to have the dynamic flaps.

Thanks for the clarification! So I stand corrected...

Will have to drive the car again and listen to it with an open window or standing (or have my hearing checked)

You have to realize though, a 550 is never going to sound like a 63.

I removed the resonators from my S63 Coupe. Sounds a little louder.

Was it difficult? Did the dealer remove the resonators? Is it too loud?

Quick Reply: On the S550 coupe, does the Sport button change the Exhaust/Exhaust note?
