S Class Cabrio

Given that the forthcoming S-class cabriolet will threaten to cannibalize exactly nothing in the Mercedes lineup, Benz is taking some unusual liberties with the car. The most obvious so far is “leaking” a detailed sketch that shows both the interior and the exterior styling.

Due on sale here next year, the S-class cabriolet will be the first S convertible since 1971, and it will be available with all the usual S-class engines and with both all- and rear-wheel drive. It’s also the sixth variant spun off the current-gen S-class, enough to nearly stretch end to end across Vatican City. The cabriolet will join the sedan (W222), the long-wheelbase sedan (V222), the superlong Mercedes-Maybach (X222), the relatively short coupe (C217), and the oh-no-they-didn’t mega-stretched Pullman.

The sketch shows that the droptop will share much of its aesthetic with the gorgeous coupe, including the sloping, chamfered rear; scalloped sides; and semi-clamshell hood. The open-air car, however, will feature a reinforced set of A-pillars to keep it in line with its siblings in terms of crash safety.

A full four-seater, the center console will flow between the front occupants and into the rear compartment, and the car will carry over the S-class coupe’s highly attractive dashboard. The W222 S-class was launched in 2013 and Benz delivered more than 100,000 of them last year, outstripping competitors like Audi’s A8, BMW’s 7-series, Jaguar’s XJ, and the Lexus LS.

That pic looks nice - hopefully the final version looks as good in person. Looking forward to seeing this in person too!

Stunning! But is it worth the 40K premium over the sedan when you hear more noise/lose the comfort of the rear seats? IMO, not so much. Still a beautiful automobile though!

40k premium over the sedan?!?! I thought that at max it would be 10k over the coupe

Well, around there; if the sedan starts at 96K, the coupe at 122K, then anywhere between 10-15 over the coupe

I already think the premium over the sedan for the coupe is way too high

I'll be seeing this in person at the Frankfurt auto show next month, and placing my order as soon as the order books open. The biggest decision will be which exterior color to get, given MB's limited choices. I have two SLs now, and love open-top motoring, but the SL is a bit cramped for me, a tall guy. Plus I really want a heated steering wheel! LOL. The 2015 SL will go to my wife so she can upgrade her 2009.

I can squeeze my 6'4" frame into the back, but it requires some semi-pro gymnastics skills. Once I'm in, it's not too bad. But if I'm driving, my seat is about 1" from the front of the rear driver's side seat, so I'd say it's more of a 2+2 than a 4-seater.
