Magnetic door stops?

Just wanted to see whether or not everyone here has the 'infinite' magnetic door stop (basically, instead of the 3 steps in a usual door hinge, you can leave the door open at any point and it'll hold). Not a new feature, it's been around in top-tier luxury sedans for a while now.

The reason I ask is because I was playing around with a new 2015 S550V in the showroom and noticed it does not have the magnetic door stop, instead, it had a 3-stage stop like normal car doors. Tried with a different 2015 at a different dealership and it, too, did not have the magnetic stop.

My short-wheelbase 2015 S550W on the other hand does have the magnetic door stops. It doesn't hold well on any sort of steep incline, but does hold the door at any point when the ground is level.

Curious if there's any rhyme or reason why some cars have it and why some don't... I recall my friend's 2014 S550V having the magnetic stop, but can't be certain.

This change occurred in the late 2015 models and continued through to the 2016 models.

Not a good change in my opinion.

Interesting... good to know. Seems like a downgrade. Glad mine is an earlier production 2015.

. Me too! That is one feature I love about the car and can't understand why MB doesn't extend it down to at least the E Series, if not the entire range. My W221 had it and it always worked great. Why in the world would they go BACKWARDS with technology?

Are you sure it was changed during late 2015 model year production?
My V222 was a May 2015 build date, and it has the infinite door stops on all 4 doors.

I know it was changed for 2016 for sure. I know it was not changed at mid-cycle 2015, so since the OP said he saw a 2015 with the change, I can only assume that the change took place in late 2015.

Frankly, I originally thought it was for 2016, but the OP saw a 2015 with the change.

My S550 was built in March of 2015 and has the infinite stops. As much as I like them they are not strong enough. If I am on a hill they are not strong enough to hold the door open like the old 3 stage. Perhaps that is why they are going back to them??

As much as I hate it not holding on a slight slope, it's pretty nifty to show off on level ground

I love the infinite door stop on my 2015 SL550. It does suck that gravity is an irresistible force.
