Do you think I could buy one on ebay and have it programmed to my car? the idea of just having my cellphone and wallet sounds great.

doubt it. The transponders and receivers in new cars and new keys likely operate on a different frequency, since the technology is about 20 years newer. In the near future, all you will need is your cell phone to unlock/lock/start your car.

The new E-class already does that (somewhat). You can use a smart phone with NFC as a car key. The facelift S will have that as well...

Cool feature: The phone will work as a key even if the phone is out of juice

Uncool feature: The phone has to be pulled out of your pocket and touch the door handle. You can't keep it in your pocket
