Turning Off 4Matic?

Hello. Is it possible to turn off 4Matic to make the S550 (2015) drive as a Two-Wheel Drive? I think the ride and gas mileage would improve if this were possible. Thank you.

Sorry, I know I'm a dick. But the thread title caught my eye as I was scrolling down the front page and I had to investigate further.

Yes there is a way. Buy a none 4matic rear wheel drive S 550.

I don't mind the laughs at my expense, but obviously didn't realize it was such a ridiculous question.

We have a vehicle that we paid 1/3 the price for the S550, and that vehicle has a simple Auto 4WD or 2WD option.

You wouldn't want that feature/drivetrain on your $100k car. It is an inferior design to the full-time AWD found in cars like MB/Audi/Subaru. Unless you're talking about a truck, as that is a different story.

Switching to 2wd won't make your car ride better (would make it handle better) but it would give you slightly improved fuel economy. But in a $100k car, why would that even be a thought/concern?

Thanks for the explanation. Did not realize it is a better design.

Trump, is that you...?

Come on now, that's going a bit too far with the misogynistic generalizations if you ask me. Who says he's a car guy? Male or female is irrelevant; non car people are non car people.

The fuel economy gain from a 2wd vehicle is not having the extra transfer case, axles, driveshaft, etc carrying around with you all the time. The vehicle does not send power to all 4 wheels all the time, only as needed. But there is no way to improve ride or handling on a car which has a heavier drivetrain installed compared to a lighter one. You just can't get rid of the weight and drag.

A good set of non-runflat tires will make a huge difference though. The cars ride like garbage because the overly hard factory tires are too stiff.

Hey, it's an actual lady, let's impress her with our sharp wit!

This is exactly why places like this are such boy's monasteries (since "men" is not an appropriate word here). The only reason this doesn't get noticed is that MB World has lots of users.

Sorry not sorry.

You know: the term 'Lady' did in fact used to mean something.......I haven't seen or bumped into a 'Lady' in a very long time.....

All I see these days are stuck up ***** with earbuds and their telephone computer in their hands wearing stretchy pants and down vests.......

Sorry, but they are sorry these days......

OK.

The reason you don't see "ladies" around here is because most women(and men when you think about it) aren't enthusiasts of the automobile. They just see it as a means for transportation. I have met and seen many female users on car forums, they just happened to be far and between compared to men. Nothing bad about that, it's just the way it is.

It's like Pinterest. You don't see me on there talking about throw pillows and drapes do you? No, cause I like horsepower and "Man stuff"

And the reason that this doesn't get noticed? Because no one cares.

No mam. The 4Matic is a full time AWD system. Unless you buy a RWD S550 you will always have the 4Matic in play.

Ride does not improve.
Gas milage? Why worry about 1-2mpg more or less when you drive a 6 figure car?
