Besides autonomous features, what will be different in the 2018 S Class?

Hi all,

Just wondering what more they could possibly add to an already totally gizmo loaded vehicle. Of course the " driverless features" this is a given ( not sure how long it will take regulators to actually allow fully autonomous though )...

All I can think of would be Apple Car Play. Not sure how useful that is to me as I hate Using SIRI and it's pretty much voice controlled. Besides, do we really need to text while we are driving...

Any other thoughts, opinions or knowledge on what's next for the W222.2?

As always, thank our in advance!

Steve

I am not 100% sure but browsing the net and Watching YouTube videos,, I expect the following changes :

1) A new, more fuel efficient V8 and 48 V battery system. Torque is expected to be the same as in the current V8 but HP up by 20-30.
2) revised steering wheel design with added functionality. Perhaps similar to new E class steering wheel with touchpad.
3) revised main display that eliminates center buttons and combines two separate displays into one.
4) revised bumper ( both front and rear ) , grill , headlights and exhaust tips.
5) more interior ambient color choices. Heard 64 as in the E- class.
6) revised console touchpad design.

likely new color and trim choices as well as updated electronics and software.

Regards ,
Oz

I find "germancarforum.com" way more active on the upcoming FL S- class.

check out their dedicated thread from which I gathered most of my information:

New model designations will be S450 and S560, each available in 4matic. Not sure yet about AMG models.

For international market, new inline 6 M256 engines to replace the current M276 V6 engines. The highest output variant of this engine (408ps/402hp) might come to US as the S450.

The V8 engines in both international market and US, the old 4.7 V8 engine will be replaced by M176 V8 engine(same family of engines as the hardcore 63AMG) with an output of 476ps/469hp. This non AMG v8 will get an iconic name according to mercedes which i guess is the s560 nomenclature.

The S63 AMG will be upgraded to the same engine as the E63 S that is smaller(4.0 vs 5.5) but produces 612ps vs 585ps previously.

No words yet on the v12 engines.

there will also be some interesting new headlight technology that can do amazing things like project lane markers & walkways for pedestrians...great videos on YouTube.
Map guidance to Drive Pilot for taking exit ramps at reduced speed, etc.
Big news is that they are upgrading many shortcoming of the E Class SAD system.

I'm not so sure the torque of the 4.0 will match the 4.7, as the 4.0 in the current AMG version (GTS) is putting out about 14 lbs less. The non-AMG version could be tuned for torque however, vs the AMG's tune for HP.

I luv how they keep increasing the numerical nomenclature as the displacement goes down lol.

The digital light techonology will not come to the S class FL this year. It will only be launched in the new CLS next year

Hmmmm. Could you provide a link to a news piece on this? That's not what was said at CES. Thanks

The title of this video is misleading I think . From what I researched, the new headlights will be capable of this technology but won't have the functionality in the upcoming FL model due to laws and regulations.

On on the other hand we will have some implementation of what Mercedes calls as " fit and healthy " concept development.

check the YouTube video below that includes demo of this system and confirmation that we will have this to some extent in the FL model.

After watching that video, it feels like they are running out of good ideas or gizmos that really do elevate the driving experience either from a comfort or safety perspective.

The heart rate concept feels really stupid and a big waste to me...but maybe because I am a long distance cyclist who wears a heart rate monitor when I excercise...for driving, seems pretty irrelevant.

Thoughts???

In an era of fitbits, Apple Watch and abundance of health and fitness related apps and gizmos, imho Mercedes is simply responding to contemporary consumer trends. Would it elevate driving experience ? No , not really but as long as it's optional and I dont have to use it every time I get in the car , wouldn't really bother me ... in principle , agreed it's most likely not a useful addition to what already seems like a complex array of features and confusing menus ...

The digital light system will not come to the S-Class for MY18 nor will it come to the next CLS (MY19)

It goes to 84 LED's, the CLS will go to 1024 LED's. The digital light system will have a million micro mirrors per headlight side...

Would be nice to see at least the full intelligent lighting system used in Europe come to the US.

I'm so happy our US regulators are protecting us from safer lighting technology.
