Sometimes I fold my laundry at home. So I guess I'm helping the cause!

Not to sound like an arse...but this sounds like crap. Why on earth would they need all these peoples computers to do these calculations. Doesn;t NASA have super computers that can do all these calculations for them.

I think I've been spammed!

It's a project sponsored by Stanford (check the link... stanford.edu )

http://folding.stanford.edu/stats.html

If you check their stats page, you can see that they've been an active project for well over five years now.

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/m...type=userstats

User stats.

This is a totally legit thing, plus it's free and can only cause good in the world It's really a win win situation.

Fold on your PS3

Quote:
With 10,000 machines joined together the researchers calculate they should be able to do a thousand trillion calculations per second.

If that was achieved it would be nearly four times as fast as the world's most powerful supercomputer, IBM's BlueGene/L System, capable of 280.6 trillion calculations per second.
Well at least the PS3 will be good for something...

I'm still a little confused on how this works. So this utilizes the unused space on our computers to do the work? Do the scientists not have enough computers?

Not space persay, it's unused computing power.
Say you have a 1ghz cpu. Well no one ever uses their 1ghz 24/7. This program will use the spare cycles (if you ARE using your computer, this program stops) and will do some math to solve some stuff and then submit to Stanford.

You are correct in a sense that the scientists not having enough computers. This is called distributed computing. Distributed computing is supposedly the future of 'supercomputing'.

Quick update on this stuff.

A lot of our members have seemingly lagged out

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...php?s=&t=45431

But check that out, statistics of our progress.

We are poised to take over the following Folding@Home teams
The 37
Virtual-Octane.net
The Bush School
Demonoid Folding
Bean

If all things are equal. In reality I just added three Apple dual core computers to the mix, and hopefully soon, two more dual core computers.

If you have an Intel Mac, there is a nifty new client out that works about 8x faster than before. If you have an ATi graphics card on Windows, there is a GPU client out that is about 300!!x faster than normal.

I do have some badnews though, the following teams are posed to overtake us soon
NeoGAF
Danno
Expression Networks
www.ruckus.co
FullContactZone.com

We need more members representing mbworld.org! It's for a great cause and is really easy to install!
