Right after the cop says "stop resisting!" I think the guy says "I will resist" in response. If that's what he said, then he's officially a dumbass. That's a good way to get some additional beatdown.

Did you hear the bad guy's supporters screaming, "Stop hitting him!" ? That's why it's a dangerous job. Could turn into a mob scene and police lynching really fast.

God bless them when they are doing their jobs professionally. Unfortunately, human beings given authority over their fellow human beings is something that will never work. No matter how honest and fair you are, the authority can and WILL get to your head. Only a matter of time. The results are obvious in today's LEOs. Most of them are rude, unfair and get away with things that a normal civilian would be incarcerated for.

Only 40% of cops I have dealt with were nice and professional and no, I did not consider them unprofessional because they gave me a speeding ticket.

You give someone authority over somewhere else and abuse is bound to happen.

As Cartman says ... "RESPECT MA AUTHORATAAYYYYY"

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Shakespeare wasn't it?

Given the limitation that we can't custom make our military or law enforcement officers, or get robots, what should we do to do our best to get the right people into role? Background investigations? lie detector tests? Psych evals? Basic written and oral skills tests? Medical evaluations for fitness and healthiness?

Where should we look for these people? colleges? altar boys? former military? eagle scouts?

I don't know if we, as a society, can do much more than we do now to stack the odds in our favor of picking the best we can, and then placing whatever checks and balances we can on them.

I'd be open to hearing input.

There is no one place an agency can go to find people qualified to be police. The physical and mental tests now used are quite effective. The problem is a political one. The elected rascals have turned the police into a collection agency, and the elected police administration has set policies and practices that encourage bad behaviour. The first thing that could be done is to eliminate the "look the other way" policies of police management when officers do not meet the standards. Eliminate quotas and job evaluations tied to fiscal performance of the officer.

Discontinue the ability of police to earn money to feather their own nest. Stop the asset siezure laws that put money in the police budget. Sanction cops who lie on reports, leave out details, and fail to perform the duties of their assignments.

All monies from fines should be returned to all citizens of the state. This would reduce fines to sane levels, and eliminate the tendencies of police, government, and Courts to protect their budgets with money from those "guilty SOB's."

These items would increase respect for police and the job they do. I feel it is a lack of respect that fosters some of the violent confrontations. If people knew they would be treated fairly by police, prosecuters, and Courts they would be more cooperative with police.

It was Mark Twain that said we need to change politicians as often as we change diapers, and for the same reasons.
