Any Garage guys?

I recently painted my garage floors with the Rustoleum Epoxy Sheild. I thought I would share my experience with it here. I didn't take any before pictures other than this one with my last car. You can see my garage floors were nasty as well as the rest of the garage. I couldn't take it any more and invested a few days in fixing it up.

The Rustoleum kit itself is very easy to use, but its all about the floor prep. After washing and sweeping out the garage, I threw out the citric acid that came with kit in favor of muratic acid. The muratic acid is much more potent/toxic and will do a better job of etching the concrete. The second phase requires multiple rinsing of the garage floor with high pressure water. Once the floor is prepped and cleaned fill the cracks with a premixed cement putty. Make sure the floor is just slightly wet when doing this. After the cracks are filled you can roll the paint on..... its pretty darn easy.

Anyhow, what does this have to do with ML's? Well this is where she sleeps and gets worked on...

I did that long back....

Don't have pictures..but I did that long back...just after moving in to my house, the first improvement I did was painting the garage floor.

The garage just looks so much more cleaner, nicer and is more inviting to work in..

gshock - How long did it take you from start to finish? I have been considering doing the same to my garage which appears to be in about the same condition as yours except I have one crack that is deeper than yours.

Once the garage is completely cleared, it only takes about 10 hours of prep time. Oil/grease stains have to be cleaned/scrubbed thoroughly. Other than that you have to sweep, wash out, and prep with a cleaner such as muratic acid or the citric acid that comes with the kit (this has to be done a number of times). As for the cracks, just use the cement patch it will fill in just fine.

The final test before painting:
1) When washing out the floor does the water bed in any areas? If it does, you need to reprep this area until it does not bead.
2) Run your fingers across the cement. Does any cement dust come up? All of the dust should be removed by high pressure water.
3) Tape off a 6"x6" area with plastic. Leave it on 24 hrs. When you remove it should not have any moisture between the plastic and the cement.

I did the epoxy paint floor in my last house. It was an easy install but it wasn't that durable over time (5 years).

I installed VCT when we moved into our new place. Clean up is easier, once you get it properly waxed.

I have never had epoxyed floors last the test of time either, even when professionally applied. Your approach seems like a much more durable solution.

We are designing the floor to the garage of the new house right now.
Looks like we are going to checker with 18x18 tiles. Most likely absolute
black marble and mirror.

I think the tiles will certainly have a durability factor that is greater than the epoxy, but I just love the grey with fleck.

yeah, thats what we are putting in the porch. It will look better
than just regular brushed concrete. Something nice so when we
have BBQ's and stuff, it looks inviting to friends/family.

Some Pete Guy, I like the look of your VCT floor. However, how does it hold up to oil spills , greese etc what kind of maintenance is required and where can I buy the checkerboard style VCT that you have ?

Spills wipe right up.

I applied a few coats of wax, which I'll probably refresh yearly. If it gets dusty/dirty you just mop it, or hose it out. Easy.

The VCT can be bought at any Home Depot type place. It's Armstrong Excelon in 12" x 12" tiles.

I used the tiles to create 2x2 squares that I laid out "on the 45"

p.s. gshock, get that Epic dirty.
