ML350 Importance of fuel grade

Is it really essential to use high octane fuel vs. 87 regular or 91 mid-grade?

The use of lower octane fuel is not recommended for vehicles with a compression ratio of 10.5:1 or higher. Using 87 octane fuel on your 12.0:1 compression engine increases the chance of pre-detonation (or engine knock) under engine load that could result in premature engine failure. Also, the use of additives with incorrect octane fuel can also lead to excessive wear on internal parts.
