Good DIY writeup! But you should have used Mobil 1 10W-40 not 10W-30.
There's a section on 'Approved Engine Oils' in the Factory Approved Service Products booklet that came with your Owners Manual.

I wrote the wrong oil viscosity down in the instructions. I did use 0W-40 not 0W-30. Sorry guys about the screw up. I corrected the document/attachment. I am fairly certain that the correct viscosity for the R500 is 0W-40 and not 10W-40.

I just changed the oil in our '06 R350 and it had to be the easiest oil change I have ever done. The Mityvac took a little time to get it all out (my version had only a 7.3 liter capacity, so I had to drain once), but doing everything on top of the car was so simple that my wife could do it. Not that oil changes require an engineering degree, but not doing this yourself is really throwing $$ away.

Good writeup by the way. The R350 engine (althought lacking the extra cylinders) is just about identical for oil changes (oil filler is on the left, though).

I plan to do my oil change myself too. Does the R350 also take 10w-40 oil? Also, has anyone had experiences in doing all the Service A and B by yourself instead of taking it to the dealership? Do you get charged at the end of the lease by not having it done at a dealership?

I use 0W-40 Mobile One in my R350. I have performed both the A and B myself, the stealer can't charge you anything to my knowledge as long as you keep receipts for all your parts purchased as proof that you did the service. Good luck...it's mucho easy!

NO Mercedes require oil specifically tested to Mercedes requirements. Oil for your car must meet Mercedes specification 229.5.

clearly you haven't received the memo from mercedes. due to 0w40 being hard to find in many cases mercedes said it is ok to use 5w40 or 10w40 which is much more readily available.

don't believe me, go and talk to your mercedes shop foreman.

5W-40 and 10W-40 are NOT descriptors of MB229.5 compliance.

Yes, there's M1 5w-40 ESP Formula M that's approved, but there is no Mobil 1 10W-40 approved and besides, the original guy never said mobil 1 he just said 10w-40 and that can mean any brand.

BTW, the 5w-40 Mobil 1 that's approved is only available at Mercedes dealers.

You can take to the bank Mercedes hasn't told its service advisors that non-MB229.5 oils are ok.

Others from sheet 229.3 include Mobil 1 5W-40, Mobil 1 5W-50, Mobil SHC Formula MB 5W-30, and Mobil Special X 5W-40.

The beauty of Sheet 229.5 is that: 1. It's a shorter list; 2. It only lists 3 Exxon Mobil oils, one being Mobil 1 0W 40; 3. You can go longer between changes...if memory serves MB says up to 15,000 kilometres.

By the way Sheet 325 contains all the coolant choices - - even harder to find - Just buy it from MB and you're good to go - mix it with distilled water though 50:50 if it's not pre-mixed. Always handy to have a jug around.

I got the Mobil 1 0W-40 Euorpean formula oil at NAPA auto parts. I have seen it at some other places also, like Autozone, Costco - and some have seen it at WalMart, but we don't at ours. Call around to your local auto parts dealers and see if they have it. The oil filter, I ordered online along with other maintenance stuff like new wiper blades, air filters, cabin air filters, etc. I would shop online, pick up a couple of oil filters and anything else you need, most good online parts dealers offer free shipping if you spend over $50.00 Make sure you get right fleece filter for your vehicle.

How do you reset the service reminder on the computer display? My manual says its a dealer service procedure but I read another oil change thread referencing resetting the reminder - but no steps of how to.

I wondered if there was something wrong with mine (06 R500). Filter cap separates from the center pipe assembly. Is it broken or is it how it is supposed to be? My R500 started to leak oil at the oil filter cap. As I can't fix it by replacing the o-ring, I's suspicious if this have anything to do with it. If any one knows, appreciate it if you could share your knowledge. Thank you,

I have changed the filter but do not know if the largest ring is placed all the way to the top of the filter housing or 1 row below it. I tried to see the picture but I couldn't tell where to place the large ring.

The instructions were great, I just couldn't remember how high to place the ring on the unit.

Most Mercedes parts supply houses on the internet sell the oil cap + filter kit, if you can't get one delivered to you from an online vendor, then try your dealer, they will have one. If you are asking about the oil pump, try Amazon.com

I am trying to find right oil wrench for the R500 but there isn't exact part number. does anybody know that? I counted flats and measured hex which are 14 flats and 24mm hex. I spent hours finding right parts.

74mm cap wrench with 14 flutes. HAZET makes one part # 103 589 02 09 00

Just remove the cover under the engine and pull the drain plug. It is not hard at all, mutch faster and you get more oil out.
