Programming a key remote for R class
I bought a remote key (fob) from ebay and would like to program it with my 07 Mercedes R class.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions or instructions

MBWorld Fanatic!
It's impossible and keys purchased from eBay are only souvenirs.
MBUSA keeps a database of the number of keys issued for each car, and the only way to get a replacement key that works is from a Mercedes dealer.

Talk to your dealer to see whether he is willing to program it for you and update the database with the new key. I doubt it, but it's worth to try.
It does make sense why! Here is a scenario: I am the valet at your favorite restaurant and you leave me your car on a Saturday night. I purchase a key on Ebay and program it to work with your car (if there was such a procedure). Then I see the car on the street and all I have to do is drive away with it. You are stuck without a car and are upset at MB for allowing this to happen!!!

Key issues from newly ordered key from dealer
I just ordered a factory key from local dealership and it did not work ($320). The service person said he never saw this before on over a 100 keys ordered. The blank that was cut for door also did not work. Is there a chance the car I bought used has been reprogrammed, so it does not work for the key I ordered? I do not know the car's service history and it has a salvage vehicle title, but all VIN numbers match. The current key I have works fine, but i am worried if I lose it.
The order for the key also has correct VIN#s - What could have happened?

Hi Joel ! welcome to the R's ...
i'm just going out on a limb (so take what i'm about to say with a grain of salt)...
but perhaps the ECU or ignition assembly (whatever part of the car that marries up the key to car) has been swapped over from the original?
As you said, it's a salvage and you don't have it's history, i can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't work if it followed the VIN#
Perhaps one of the others will be more informed, and as this does not sound like it's a W251 class specific problem, try posting on one of the technical boards?
Best of luck !
