Check Engine light - problem fixed - how long until light goes out?

Had a loose gas cap. Caused "Check Engine" light. Tightened cap, light went out after a week.

Had message to add engine oil. Caused "Check Engine" light. Topped oil, light went out after a week.

How many starts, miles, or hours after correction does the light remain on before extinguishing/acknowledgement of the correction. Any way to extinguish immediately after the correction?

I've never had a "check engine" light come on for adding oil. The message window says its a quart low and to add a quart which I do. By the time it comes on again, its time to change the oil. Acquire and ODBC II scan tool and reset it immediately if it bothers you. I dislike seeing a check engine light and while they are rare, I turn them off as soon as a problem is resolved.

Just before last oil change, I checked oil level. It displayed "oil level ok". Drained oil. 7.5 qts came out. After the filter change, I replenished with 7.5 qts. After 5 minute warm up and subsequent wait, I checked level. "Oil level ok".

A month later display indicated add 1.5 qts. Added 1.5 qts. Display indicated "oil level ok".

Next oil change I will replenish with 8 qts.

I'll buy the tool.

Question Loose Gas Cap Message and Check Engine Light

I have an E500 and received a loose gas cap message and the low gas light was flashing. It went off after I turned the car off. However, I started the car and was driving and the message came back with the low gas indicator light was flashing. I shut the car off and the message cleared. However, the check engine light has come on. Has anyone experienced this type of occurrence and how was the problem resolved?

I'd change the gas cap (not expensive) and go to Advanced or Discount auto parts and have them reset the computer (free).
